Eastside: The Greatest School
"No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else."
Week of December 3rd
Eastside Mission & Vision
Working in partnership with the community, Eastside Elementary will provide all students:
A collaborative team of professionals who are committed to improve their practices, so that all students learn at high levels
A safe, positive, and inviting learning environment
An engaging and challenging curriculum focused on essential academics and life skills
Individualized and timely support that provides students with what they need to succeed
Making Believers at The Greatest School
Some of you have heard the buzz about our kids showing great growth in MAP reading!!! I'm so excited for these students on an individual level and I know all of you are, because I heard it in the voices of those of you that came running to tell me!
At this point, we have to believe in what we are doing. We have to celebrate success, small and large with our students, so they believe in their greatness and potential. I talked about the idea of confidence and belief in our recess meetings on Friday with K-5 teachers. I wanted all of you to know that you are doing GREAT things.
If you don't believe it yet, listen to this. The week before Thanksgiving Break, I was contacted by Solution Tree. They asked me to speak at a national conference based on the great work happening at Eastside. I tell you all the time that Solution Tree is really impressed at our work, but this should make you believe it! I will be gone Monday and Tuesday of this week to speak at a national educator's conference in Dallas. I get to speak about my favorite people, the staff and students of Eastside! Keep up the great work at The Greatest School. I can't wait to see the results of our K-2 kids on the MAP test this week.
We have 14 days before the end of this year to make a difference. If you take out all the interruptions, it is more like 10 days. Let's go!

Important News:
PROWL happens - Monday through Thursday this week. What does PROWL intervention fully engaged look like? Teacher working with a small group of students on a skill. Teacher is right beside students either seating with them or standing. Kids are engaged for the entire 30 minutes with an activity, which could vary based on the intervention. The kids that are in your groups are the "critical mass". They have to have your expertise to be successful. This is not a time to try group work. They need you as the teacher giving direct instruction in some form or fashion about the skill they are lacking. Based on SWEEPS last week, we are so close to full engagement. Let's achieve that this week.
Attendance Focus - We placed your student attendance tracker sheets in your box on Friday. Make sure students are charting their attendance daily and you are modeling that for them on your board as well. Remember to hang up the Attendance competition chart outside your door on Monday. (2nd grade - see Mrs. Manning for your charts.) As we discussed in recess meetings, you will calculate percentage of students present each day and record it on the chart. We will collect these percentages up to Dec 18. On Dec 19, you will let students know which class out of their grade had the highest percentage and they will receive their 30 minute celebration (which you as the classroom teachers are choosing). Mrs. Manning and I will calculate grade level percentages and the winning grade will receive a 30 minute dance party in the PE building on December 20th! Remember, December is a difficult month to get the kids here, so keep these incentives fresh on their minds.
K-2nd grade will STATE MAP test this week. Please make sure to refer to student data binders to have students set goals and revisit how important this round of testing will be. We need our students to try their best!! Remind students of the incentive.
Items being placed in your mailbox todayl Food Drive letters -each class is trying to stock a box. See Mrs. Hogg if you have questions. AMI letters and Literacy Night flyers are also being placed in your mailbox today. Make sure these make it in the Monday folders as well.
INFO ABOUT LITERACY/SCIENCE NIGHT from Mrs. Krogman: Twas a Crafty Christmas Night on December 10th at 6 PM. Make sure to include this in your newsletter. Mrs. Manning and Mrs. Hogg purchased some of your items for the crafts. Check with them to get your items. Remember there was a $30 limit per grade level for craft items.
- Any Christmas ornament or decorating by students will need to be at a minimum and be creative with the time, such as doing some of it during a rotation center so instruction can continue. I LOVE Christmas and I still hang my children's ornaments on our tree, but I don't need 3-5 ornaments each year. One is a wonderful memory!! If you need help brainstorming ideas to minimize loss of instruction then please visit with Mrs. Manning and I. You could get a parent volunteer to allow the students to rotate out in hallway while teacher is still instructing!
- We will not ask parents for money for any craft items or party items. Also, make sure that all food brought for parties are purchased from stores and not homemade.
- DRA window opens December 3rd. Just a reminder that this can only be completed by certified staff. Update scores on the EES Literacy Assessments Google sheet
- 2nd Nine weeks writing assessments will need to be administered, graded, and entered on the literacy assessment spreadsheet prior to leaving for Christmas break.
Progress Monitoring and Documentation: We will wait on MAP progress monitoring since we are beginning our MAP Winter testing.
Dibels PM 3-5. SIT documentation updates are for K-2.
Make sure if you are working with a SIT child during tier 1 instruction, interventions during PROWL or class time, you are commenting on their sheet. All SIT documentation should be completed by 3:40 on Friday. If you are working with a child but do not have access to their SIT sheet, email Mrs. Manning for access.
