Language is the most powerful tool available to teachers. It permeates every aspect of teaching and learning. This course will identify teacher language that helps children learn. Teachers will become more aware of the impact their language has on students and learn strategies for listening and asking open-ended questions. Understanding and Supporting Students with Autism in Schools

The purpose for this course is to give participants the foundation they need to understand the importance of social emotional learning, and have necessary resources to begin to implement social emotional learning in their classroom. One of the most important pieces is to have an emotional understanding of ourselves first so we can model/teach emotion scientist techniques as well as coping strategies for emotions that are uncomfortable. By starting with ourselves, we are better able to affect and teach the students we care for each day.
Course Goals:
- Each participant will have an awareness of the importance of Social Emotional Learning.
- Each participant will understand the RULER approach to Social Emotional Learning/Instruction.
- Each participant will be provided with Social Emotional Learning resources.
- Each participant will have the capability and opportunity to be an “emotion scientist.”

Participants will be able to take away new strategies for engaging all learners in the classroom. Active and passive participation strategies will be taught and a chance to create classroom materials will be given. Participants will be taught participation strategies through the lens of an actual student. Several strategies will be shared and then participants will have time to assess which strategies best work for their classroom and create appropriate materials for immediate use.
Engaging all Students: Focus on Poverty

Participants will explore factors that impact student engagement as discussed in Eric Jensen's book Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind. Connections between economic status and student engagement will be generated. The rules and functions of engagement as well as strategies will be presented using a format that models the actual concepts throughout the seminar. The seminar ends with participants considering ways to implement these ideas in their daily practice.

During this three part workshop participants will:
Session 1 - Develop an understanding of their role in creating boundaries, and the creative ways to communicate these boundaries to others, so you can show up as your best self. Session 2 - Work to understand conflict by diving into both constructive and destructive responses, and how shifting our focus can play a powerful role in changing the outcome of a conflict. Session 3 - Wrap up the study of conflict by discussing 7 steps for engaging in difficult conversations and roleplaying conflict examples.

The IEP as a Legal Document
