Preserve Mexico land!
By: Chad S., Taylor S., and Samantha V.
Let's keep those greedy Americans out of Mexico's beautiful land!
The Americans have been taking over whatever land they want and Mexico is not giving in. Article 27 prohibits people who are not Mexican citizens to own land within 60 miles from its international borders and within 30 miles from its coasts. Mexico, due to economic issues, has been debating over whether or not we should remove Article 27.
How the US was interfering with property ownership.
Settlement of Texas
Spain owned a huge part of North America including Texas in 1821. The Spanish were afraid of losing control of the land, so they started the settlement of Americans into the land to help protect it. All the Americans had to do was follow Spanish laws if they came into the land. Mexico soon took over the land and the laws changed. The Mexican government outlawed slavery, the settlers had to learn Spanish, and Texans had to start paying taxes for the first time. The Americans didn't like the idea of these new laws. The Americans wanted to keep their slaves to help out on the cotton farms, they didn't want to learn a new language, and change their religion. If Mexico took away Article 27 and let Americans back into their land, then the Americans could revolt against their laws once again like they did back in 1829.
Texas War for Independence
In the Texas war for Independence Texas revolted back against the Mexican government to gain freedom and become their own republic. One of the battles during the Texas war for Independence was the battle of San Jacinto. The battle of San Jacinto took place in present day Harris County Texas on April 21st, 1836, and was the last Texas War for Independence Battle. This battle was fought between Santa Ann who wanted Texas to remain a part of Mexico, while Texas general Sam Houston fought for the Texans freedom. The outcome of this was a short lived 18 minute battle, and the Texans gaining freedom and Victory. Mexico shouldn't allow Americans to settle near coasts in Mexico because during the Texas War of Independence, Texas interfering with the property ownership of Mexico which caused war. If we would take away Article 27 and let Americans to settle into Mexico, then the Americans might fight Mexico again.
The War with Mexico
The War with Mexico was a war where Mexico was fighting for land against the US. The War with Mexico was fought in which is today New Mexico, California, northern Mexico, and Mexico City. The War of 1846 to 1848 was fought because America was stationing armed troops on the Rio Grande River which Texas and Mexico claimed. America was already interfering with are property ownership of Mexico and they will do it again if we let them be able to buy land in Mexico near the coast. Again if we would take away Article 27 and let Americans to settle in our land, then the Americans can revolt against our government like they did before.
