Thursday Updates

Dear Galvin Families,

Every Thursday (occasionally it's a Friday) we send out a weekly update and reminder of any events in the upcoming week(s) at The Galvin. Below are next week's upcoming events.

No School Reminder

There is No School on Monday, September 30th in honor of Rosh Hashanah.

PAWStivity week has been a huge success! GMS celebrated PAWSitivity Week every day this week. We celebrated each other, acts of kindness and a commitment to anti-bullying. We have one day left. Please encourage your child to wear green, white and/or Canton gear to show their school spirit.

REMINDER - Grade 6 Ice Cream Social

All grade 6 students are invited to our annual ICE CREAM SOCIAL after school on Friday, September 27th. The social will be held in the GMS cafeteria from 2:15-3:15 pm. Students will participate in team building activities, meet new students, and eat delicious ice cream from Crescent Ridge. Reminder there is no late bus on Fridays, so students will need a ride home. (Please notify the office if your child has an allergy or intolerance to ice cream or toppings).

Clarification on Water Bottles

This year, the GMS Handbook included new language about water bottles - the word "clear". Since that change was made, we have fielded a few individual questions about the wording and want to clarify for all why this change was made.

We want to encourage our students to drink water throughout the day. We believe that this is in the best interest of our students' health and well being. What we want to curtail, however, are students drinking drinks such as sports drinks, energy drinks (i.e. Monster), and coffee. These drinks are not the healthy choices we want our students to make during the school day. In addition, when spilled, these drinks require more effort to clean.

With all of that said, we understand the health concerns many of you have relating to plastic water bottles and that popular metal water bottles on the market keep water cold for much longer than plastic. Therefore, we are not enforcing the clear water bottle and ask that you help us by ensuring that your child is drinking water throughout the day - not energy drinks, coffee, etc. In the spring as we review the GMS Handbook we will edit the language around water bottles. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

FIT-4-FUND$ is our C.A.P.T. organization's ONLY fundraiser of the year! FIT-4-FUND$ is a joint effort that brings our TEAM - school community, parents, teachers, and students - together. "Together, We Achieve More!"

Held at the Galvin, FIT-4-FUND$ asks each student to choose a wellness-based event: WALKING, BIKING, ROLLERBLADING, SKATEBOARDING, FLAG FOOTBALL, SHOOTING HOOPS, YMCA BOOT CAMP, and collect pledges. Each child will receive a FIT-4-FUND$ packet which includes the pledge sheet and an envelope. Our goal is to have every student participate and receive a donation of (at least) $60.00 per student.

In addition, all 8th grade students who raise money will earn money toward the cost of their eighth grade trip at the end of the school year.

All pledge sheets and money are due back to your child's homeroom teacher.

This year's FIT-4-FUND$ event will be held on Friday, October 4th (with a rain date of Monday, October 7th.)

Fit-4-Fund$ and Parents/Guardians

We welcome all parents/guardians to watch on event day, October 4. 6th grade-8:30-10:15, 8th grade-10:30-11:45, 7th grade-12:30-2:10. We also need volunteers help at the water stations. It promises to be a fun day for all!!!!

Families are now able to donate online to FIT-4-FUND$. On the GMS web site please use the drop down menu under FAMILIES, click on CAPT, and there is a separate FIT-4-FUND$ link for donations. Please do not log into your existing School Bucks store as the donation link is separate.

GMS 5th Annual Cultural Heritage Night

Dear GMS Families,

We are excited to share that this year GMS's 5th Annual Cultural Heritage Night will be held on Thursday October 17, 2019 from 6pm-8pm.

GMS will host the 5th annual Cultural Heritage Night (#CHN) to showcase and celebrate the many cultures within our school and community. #CHN is a school wide event.

We will again showcase performances (dance, music, and singing), have a tasting of foods from around the world, and offer amazing, engaging activities.

Please come out and help make this event another resounding success.

We ask that all families bring a dish from your heritage to be included in the tasting menu. We are asking for a dish that would serve 5+ persons and is commonly consumed within your culture.

Please note that you may provide ingredients on the dish, but if you have allergies or food restrictions please take caution when partaking in the food portion of this event.

Please use this RSVP link to let us know what you will be bringing to the night. Please contact Ms. Amy Muldoon, GMS Student Services Coordinator, via email: with any questions.

Robotics Teams

The GMS Robotics Teams are looking for 1 more parent/guardian volunteer to serve as a coach. First Lego League (FLL) rules state each team must have 2 coaches in order to participate in any FLL - sponsored competitions. We currently have one coach for our 6th grade team, but we need two. Thank you to the parents who have already volunteered. If any parents/guardians are interested please contact Steve Bauer, or 7981-821-5070 ext. 3165.
