Let's Build!
Week of January 30 - Feb. 3, 2023
Updates for the Week
Hello Wilkesboro families! We hope that your family has enjoyed a good weekend. We are calling tonight with some updates for the week of January 30 - February 3. You can find full details below by clicking on your teacher's page.
This week, we will have the first full week of school that we’ve had in several weeks. Teachers in all grades are finishing up essential mCLASS reading assessments in all grades, and students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade will be participating in important check in tests. These state-required assessments are designed to help teachers measure how students are learning grade level content. We will have 4th and 5th reading check ins on Tuesday, 5th math on Wednesday, 5th science on Thursday , and 3rd reading and 4th math on Friday. Results of all assessments will be shared with parents in February.
We’d like to let 4th and 5th grade parents know that we will share more details about our upcoming trip to Raleigh later this week. We are looking for chaperones to go with us on the trip and want to share more details of our trip planning. Please check ClassDojo for full details.
We are now accepting applications for our pre-k program for the 2023-2024 school year. If your child will be 4 on or before August 30, 2023, they may be eligible for pre-k. We will be conducting screening on March 14, and you must sign up in advance. Our program is popular and fills up quickly, so please call our office soon at 336-838-4261 if interested to sign up for screening and get more enrollment details. You must call for a screening appointment, but you can find details on our website https://wes.wilkescountyschools.org/apps/news/article/1712669
We’d like to remind you that we continue to take orders for our 2023 yearbook. The cost is $25, and we will only order yearbooks for those who order in advance. You can order a yearbook by returning the envelope and payment to school OR by ordering directly online from the Strawbridge website. You can find full details on our website: https://wes.wilkescountyschools.org/apps/news/article/1704688
We’d like to wish Nobel good luck as he competes in the WCS Spelling Bee on Tuesday night. As the calendar turns to February, we have several big events coming up like class pictures, our PTO family dance, field trips, Kids Heart Challenge, and more. Please stay tuned to ClassDojo for full details.
We want to thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement and cooperation. We are grateful to our Wilkesboro Elementary family, and we look forward to another great week!
We Love Field Trips
Field trips are a special part of school, and we are excited for students to enjoy these learning experiences again. Field trips allow students to experience new environments, learn in unique places, apply skills learned in the classroom, and connect with the real world around us. Our teachers have planned 4 to 5 field trips for each grade level.
All students are included in field trips. We calculate the cost of field trips to include gas and driver pay for bus transportation and admission tickets. Costs are calculated based on every student participating. All students will ride on our bus transportation to field trips, and we will also provide regular free lunch (or snack) for students through our cafeteria. We invite parent chaperones to attend many field trips (separate cost for parents) but not all. Some trips, like those to the JAWCC, are required by Wilkes County Schools. Click here for full details about field trips for the 2022-2023 school year!
You can pay online through the K-12 Payment Center. Click here for a link to our website about how to pay for field trips online. You can also donate to help a student here.
If you'd like to donate to help make field trips affordable for all, please contact our office at 336-838-4261.
Lunch Menu
Click here for full menus for all WCS.
K-5th graders will have ice cream on Friday. Cost increased to $1.25 due to WCS rising cost. You can pay online here using your child's ID number (see bookbag tag).
We welcome you to join your student for lunch on a day that is convenient for you. Read here for full details and lunch schedules about how to join us for lunch.
Build Language!
This year, we are working to build reading comprehension skills of all students through speaking and listening. Our routine for October is content vocabulary. We are focusing on the skills of knowing specific words for each content, like math, science, and social studies.
These oral language skills are essential for building language and reading comprehension skills in kids of all ages.
Volunteers Needed!
We are currently seeking future volunteers to serve as chaperones on field trips throughout the year. If you would like to help with a field trip with your child, please see the volunteer form below for how to sign up to be a volunteer at WES. Signing up lasts for 2 years, but must be completed every 2 years.
We Need Volunteers!
We welcome volunteers to help with school events. WCS uses Volunteer Tracker to help organize this process, and we use Sign Up Genius (shared via email and ClassDojo) to make signing up easy and convenient. To get signed up, follow steps below.
1. Go to www.wilkescountyschools.org
2. Go to the PARENTS tab at the top (or VOLUNTEER at the bottom).
3. Click on VOLUNTEERS.
4. Click on VOLUNTEER TRACKER.
5. Go to the green NEW REGISTRATION and follow instructions from there.
Level 1 volunteers can help in many ways. Level 1 volunteers can sign up to help with book fairs, school events, class parties and projects, Field Day, Fall Festival, and proctoring for tests.
Level 2 volunteers can do all level 1 tasks but can also help chaperone field trips and work more closely with students in small groups. Level 2 volunteers can also sign up for classroom tutoring and assistance, reading buddy program, tutoring, leading after school activities, and chaperoning school events field trips.
We ask that all parents/guardians who plan to attend field trips sign up to be Level 2 volunteers at the start of the year. It takes a few weeks to verify volunteers, and signing up early will make sure that you are approved in time for this year’s events and field trips.

About Attendance
School starts at 7:50 each day. Students who are participating will be marked PRESENT or ABSENT. If your child is not in school, you will need to send in absence notes the next day and it will be coded as excused or unexcused. Written notes are required and can come directly from the parent/guardian or a medical office. Also note that ClassDojo messages are great for communicating an absence, but they do NOT serve as legal documentation of absences. Please send a written note. Thanks in advance for your help!
