Reading
In our 'We Are Readers' unit, we have continued to work with informational texts in order to become readers that learn new information from books. Our mini lessons this week revolved around reading and rereading a book to learn more information each time we read. This has also helped to increase our stamina when reading independently or with a partner. Today, we focused our mini lesson on making connections to the text. We talked to our partner about how parts of the books remind us of experiences we have had in our lives. Then, we got a chance to pick our own books to practice making these connections as we read.
Writing
At the beginning of the week, we completed some directed drawings of a cat and then a raccoon. Students were encouraged to add details to their illustrations throughout this process. We also reviewed the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom to help develop an ability to respond to texts with comprehension strategies. First, we completed a retell of the story with key pictures from the book. This helped us to understand that when we retell a story, we can just focus on the main points not every detail. We also connected to our reading lesson by making a connection to the book. Each student illustrated their connection to Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by sharing a time they got hurt just like the letters in the story.
Math
Our progress in sorting by attribute has been fantastic! Students are masters at sorting by color and shape. We are challenging students to sort by other attributes as well as multiple attributes at the same time (size and shape). We will keep working on this as well as identifying how objects were sorted next week!
