Boxer Bulletin
Eastwood Academy Newsletter - Incoming Student Edition
Welcome (officially) to the Eastwood Family!
Please take a moment to watch this welcome message from me, Principal Lira!
This newsletter is uniquely yours; solely intended for students and parents who will be joining Eastwood Academy for the first time for the 2020-2021 school year. I hope that you will take your time to read through each section in it's entirety.
Course Selections!
- Selecting a course does not guarantee it will be added to the student's schedule.
- We often double block freshman students in key areas so there often is not a lot of room for electives during the freshman year.
- "Academic" courses are what other campuses refer to as "regular" classes (non-AP or non-PreAP courses). Eastwood does not use that language. We call them "Academic" classes.
- PreAP courses give you a quality point towards GPA but are more rigorous and challenging than Academic courses.
- Pathway Selection - We offer two: Cybersecurity and Engineering. Both of Eastwood’s programs are great preparation for college. If your future career goals don’t align with either program, pick the one that seems the most interesting to you. You will take one class within your pathway every year in pursuit of a STEM Endorsement on your transcript. You will need to select one and we have prepared some descriptors for each. Please read the descriptors before making a selection.
- Course selections are not a course schedule. Changes can still be made all the way up to the 15th day of school.
If you have any questions or concerns throughout your decision-making, you can reach out to either Ms. D. Morales or Ms. Stanley for guidance.

Cyber Security Pathway Description
Innovative Computer Design
Computer Forensics & OS Architecture
Cyber Defense
Engineering Pathway Description
Engineering is a family of disciplines built on fundamental scientific understanding of the natural world. In this pathway, you will learn how to invent, design, and build things to solve problems, to achieve practical goals, and to explore many different engineering specialties. Eastwood Academy’s program is project-based, so you will learn to plan and execute your vision in various projects, culminating in a senior capstone. If you are interested in becoming an engineer, a scientist, an architect, or a construction professional, this pathway will help you reach those goals. You will also engage your imagination and critical thinking skills using “Think It. Learn It. Do It” exploring many technological tools from micro bits to robots to architecture and construction. Students graduate with OSHA 30, First Aid and CPR certifications.
Summer 2020 Assignments!
The majority of incoming students are 9th graders, so I have included ALL 9th grade summer assignments in this newsletter below.
For assignments for students entering other grade levels, you will need to go to our school website to access the assignments based on the courses you selected.
If you have any questions specific to an individual summer assignments, you can email the teacher that has posted the assignment. If your child has access to the HISD Teams platform, they can also reach out via a Teams Chat.
I highly recommend subscribing to our YouTube Channel. Some teachers might post tutorial videos on our Channel over the summer.

How to Stay in the Loop
As principal of Eastwood, I strongly believe that when families are informed, they grow confidence and trust in organizations. I have made it my personal mission to manage all of our social media accounts myself and have committed to sending newsletters like this one on a monthly basis. I cannot stress enough the importance of following us on at least one of our social media platforms. It is the quickest and most efficient way to get information out to the public both from our district and the campus.
As an added measure throughout the summer I will be filming and posting Weekly Announcement videos on our YouTube channel and then posting the links to our social media accounts. I sincerely encourage you and/or your child to subscribe and turn on the notifications for our channel. We can be found by going to YouTube and searching Eastwood Academy. You'll know it's us because you'll see the school logo (EAHS in blue letters) and you'll find all of the Daily Announcement videos we've posted throughout the COVID-19 shutdown.
You can find our social media accounts listed below in the "Stay Connected" section.
