MSHSL ExCEL Award
The MSHSL sponsors the ExCEL Award, ExCEL – Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership – is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities, and who work voluntarily in their community.
Every member school of the League is invited to nominate one girl and one boy for the ExCEL Award. Nominees must:
a. be a junior in high school
b. make satisfactory progress toward graduation
c. participate in a MSHSL fine arts and/or athletic activity
d. hold a leadership position(s) in their school
e. work voluntarily in their community
This year’s junior female representative from Lakeville South is Emily Moes. Emily competes in Volleyball and Lacrosse. She also does a tremendous amount of community service and participates in a wide variety of clubs and school organizations.
This year’s junior male representative from Lakeville South is Ethan Starfield. Ethan competes in Cross Country and Track and Field. He also is a leader in many community service opportunities and school activities.
MSHSL AAA Award
The MSHSL sponsors the AAA Award (Academics, Arts, and Athletics) for one male and one female senior student.
To be eligible for the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award a student must:
be a high school senior at the time of nomination. Schools may nominate one senior boy and one senior girl for this award.
have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher at the time of nomination.
participate in at least one League-sponsored athletic program and one arts/activity program.

Math League
Advisor- Mark Liberty
Math league will be hosting their final competition on Monday, February 14th.
They are currently in 4th place in the Canterbury Division, with Jake Ebersole, Steve Launsbach, Connor King, and Elizabeth Blilie all ranking in the top 25 overall points scored.
HOSA
Advisor- Rachel Malloy
HOSA competed in the Midwinter Healthcare Competition in St. Paul and virtually.
Brendan Vukovics placed 4th on the Medical Terminology test and Alex Haugen placed second on the Pharmacology test.
Ella Fowler placed 9th in Human Growth and Development and Quinn Weaver placed 10th in Medical Law and Ethics.
Theatre
Directors- Cody Carlson and Maddie Market
The competitive one act, Overruled, placed second at subsections and will be moving on to compete at sections. This play features Paige Conner, Bryson Simonton, Annalie Strong, and Kevin Kirchoff. Along with a number of very talented tech students backstage and in the booth including Riley Fogarty on sound and Mia Martin on lights.
Our triple feature with the two student led one acts will perform on Friday, February 11th. Open to the public with a $10 entry fee. Our two student led shows are Check Please, directed by Julia Bornholdt, and A Dollar, directed by Sam Nelson.
Our show from the fall, A Midsummer Night’s Dream received multiple honors from Spotlight education including an Overall Production Honorable Mention, and specific student awards as follows:

Science Olympiad

Two of our teams took 1st in their events at Conference (Forensics and Ping-Pong Parachute) and we took 3rd overall as a team. On Feb. 5 we have our Satellite Regional Meet and hope to place in a few more events!

We finished our conference competitions in a strong 3rd place overall for the 2nd year in a row.
Our section tournament is coming up on Saturday, February 12th at Bloomington Kennedy High School. The top 3 teams will qualify for the State Tournament which is held at the Target Center on February 18th and 19th. CDT hopes to participate in both high kick and jazz for the 2nd year in a row.
Recently, 4 of our CDT teammates were chosen to represent Lakeville South and class AAA as part of the All-State Team. Congratulations to Hailey Elmhorst, Madison Zoellner, Linnea Tureson and Emma Sandquist for being chosen as our All State representatives.Debate

Adapted Floor Hockey
Head Coach- David Diehl
The Blazing Cats floor hockey team is off to a 3-0 to start and tied for first place in the conference.
Senior Miller Hertaus has three hat tricks with twelve goals.
Sophomore Caden Roseth has two hat tricks with nine goals.
Senior Shane Baker has been solid at goalie only giving up six goals in the three games.
Boys Hockey
Head Coach- Josh Storm
Record- 15-3
Ranked in the top 10 in the state in a few different polls.
In contention to win the SSC conference also in the running for the number one or two seed in section 1AA. We have key games against Rosemount, Prior Lake and Farmington coming before the end of the season.
Girls Hockey
Head Coach- Tim Morris
Currently 21-2-0 and 1st place in the South Suburban Conference.
Ranked 3rd in the state.
Taylor Otremba set school career record for points surpassing Janna Haeg’s mark of 169 points. Taylor currently has 173 points.
Claire Enright was selected to the USA Hockey National under 18 team. (Tourney in Sweden was cancelled due to Covid.)
Ryann Wright leads the SSC in assists this year.
Team won the Blaine Mid-Winter Border Battle tournament winning three games by a combined score of 19-3.
Section playoffs start in early February. The LSHS girls team should be the number 1 seed.
Wrestling
Head Coach- Mark Woitalla
The Cougar wrestling team is 3-15 in dual meets. The team has two seniors in the lineup and the rest are 10th, 9th and 8th graders. Every night this young team goes out and competes. Each week the team shows improvement.
Leading the team is Senior Peyton Hermann who just won his 100th match at the Pine Island tournament on Jan 22nd.
The wrestling team has two weeks left in the regular season before team and individual tournaments begin.
Girls Bball

7-10 Record: 6-4 in the conference

Gymnastics
Head Coach- Dusty Rotegard
South gymnastics is 5-1 in the conference and in 1st place. The team has been ranked within the top 10 for most of the year. Winning the MGGOA Invitational in the beginning of January. We've had 3 individuals break individual school scoring records.
The team competes in the Section 1AA Championship on February 10th with the state competition coming in the following week.
Alpine Ski
Head Coach- Wayne Hill
Top performers on the boys side are James Nida, Connor Oujiri and Jack Olson. Erin Otteson, Olivia Murphy, Silje Grasdal on the girls side.
Sections are on February 8th, JV Champs on February 10th and State on February 16th for those who qualify.
Nordic Ski
Head Coach- Don Duffy
We are more than 80% complete of this season. Notable accomplishments so far:
Grete Engels is near the top of our conference standings
Faye Braun, an 8th grader, took first place in our conference JV Championship freestyle race on January 24
Hayden Zoll and Rowan Hall are ranked in the top ten

Boys Swimming and Diving
Head Coach- Rick Ringeisen
The Cougar Boys' Swimming & Diving Team are undefeated in South Suburban Conference dual meets with a current record of 6 - 0. The team won the Mankato East Relay Meet against section competition, placed third out of twelve teams at the University of Minnesota Maroon & Gold Invitational (Maroon Division), won the Section 1AA True Team Section Meet and placed eighth out of twelve teams at the TrueTeam State Meet.
The team has three dual meets left in the season against Burnsville, Apple Valley, and Eagan. The Cougar Swimming & Diving Team finishes up the season with championship meets. The JV South Suburban Conference Championship meet is first, followed by the Section 1AA Championship Meet and the season concludes the first weekend in March with Class AA State Meet.
