The Puma Pride
Week of October 1, 2018
Principal's Message
Everyone survived the first full week of school! It is hard to believe that September is already over. Fortunately, the rain has subsided and the weekend was filled with fantastic fall weather and sunshine. Our students have settled nicely into their daily classroom and school day routines. Our teachers have been hard at work personalizing learning for their students. This year, our fifth-grade classrooms are now 1:1 with Chromebooks. Students will not bring the Chromebooks home. The devices will be utilized in school to engage students in individual and collaborative learning. In grades K-2, the classrooms are 2:1 with iPads. Grades three and four are 2:1 with Chromebooks. As Mr. Julius and I visit classrooms, students have expressed that they love using technology to learn. From accessing class content to collaborating with teachers and classmates, students have the opportunity to practice skills that will prepare them for college and career readiness, while also allowing teachers to provide individualized instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of the students.
October will be a busy month. Although there are no school holidays or days off in October, we have a number of educational activities and events planned. Information will be shared in the weekly newsletter.
October is Bullying Prevention Month. The Schoolwide Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (SWPBIS) program is one of the research-based programs that we have adopted this year to reduce bullying behaviors. Additionally, our Counselors have partnered with NOVA to deliver a variety of bullying lessons to all classrooms. Eliminating Bullying is a resource for parents to assist the school in combating bullying behaviors. Thank you to all of our parents and guardians for partnering with the teachers and staff to help us ensure that your child is successful in school. Together, we will make a difference!
Mr. Julius and I are looking forward to seeing you at Chick-fil-A Night on Tuesday. Have a great week!

Willow Dale Music Classes
In Music class, the Willow Dale students have been very busy learning about and feeling the "steady beat" in music. We have used movement, instruments, and even a gym ball to help us feel and keep a steady beat. Students in grades 4 and 5 have started Chorus rehearsals! They are looking forward to singing for you at the Winter Concert on December 19th at 7:00 p.m. In addition to Chorus, 5th graders are learning how to play and read music using the handbells. Late in October, twelve students will be chosen to participate in the Willow Dale Handbell Choir. Be on the lookout for that announcement!

Meet Mrs. O'Leary, Reading Specialist/ MTSS Coordinator
Mrs. O'Leary
My name is Kelley O'Leary, and I am the MTSS Coordinator and one of Willow Dale's Reading Specialists. I have been in Centennial School District for over 20 years in various roles, and this is my 5th year at Willow Dale. I have my bachelor's degree from Penn State as a Secondary Ed English major, a Master's from Holy Family as a Reading Specialist K-12, and a Master's from Gwynedd-Mercy with an Education Administration K-12 certification. In all the roles I've served, I especially love those that allow me to work closely with children in an effort to see them succeed and be happy.
At Willow Dale, as a reading specialist, I work closely with small groups of students to help them be successful with their reading skills, and I also work with teachers to support their students in reading and writing achievement. Through the process of MTSS (Multi-Tiered Student Support), I work as a team with teachers, families, reading specialists, counselors, the school psychologist, principals, and other support staff to provide assistance for students who might be struggling in any facet of their school day, whether it be academic, behavioral, social/emotional, etc. Our goal is to always help children be the most successful and happy they can be!

Parent Drop-Off Procedures
The safety of your children and all of our students is our number one priority. We have established a number of procedures to keep all of Willow Dale’s students and staff safe as well as providing a smooth transition from your car to our care. Please review the procedures below to ensure a prompt and secure drop-off.
Drop-off
- Drop off time is from 8:25 to 8:45 am.
- The traffic pattern is a one-way system throughout the parking lot of Willow Dale. All cars are to enter via the entrance closest to Street Road.
- Please follow the arrows upon entrance onto the Willow Dale campus. The traffic pattern follows around the parking lot (on the loading dock side of the building, nearest Norristown/Street Roads), and winds around to the front of the building. Please follow the one-way arrows in the parking lot to ensure student safety. Do not cut across lanes for the sake of ease. This is a safety hazard, and we value the safety of our students and staff.
- Pull up valet style so that upwards of 4 vehicles at a time may unload. There is personnel on duty to help direct traffic and to ensure the safety of our students as they are dropped off.
- Enter the drop off area at the white doors (main lobby entrance) in the front of the building.
- Students should be ready to exit vehicles immediately and only from the driver side of the vehicle.
- Do not exit your car as this causes traffic to back up along Norristown Road.
- Parents wishing to assist their children or say goodbye should park in the designated parking area and escort their child safely to the main entrance.
- All cars will exit onto Norristown Road from the intersection nearest the Willow tree.
- Cars will then continue forward and turn RIGHT to arrive at the stop sign for Norristown Road. There are two lanes: Left turn only and right turn only.
We thank you for your cooperation in ensuring that morning drop-off runs smooth and is safe for all.
