Writing Workshop
Second Graders are expected to write everyday; Pen Pal Letters, Responses, Stories, Poems, Mathematical Thinking, Science Labs, and the list goes on. Now that the students have completed learning how to correctly write each lowercase letter, they will begin building fluency. Handwriting fluency is being able to automatically write letters, form them correctly, and use appropriate spaces between letters and words without thinking. We will begin focusing on such lessons this week.
The students will continue to write original poems and explore various ways poets use language and sound to bring stronger meaning to their writing. We will use Cynthia Rylant as a mentor author to learn how precise words can be used to describe a moment with specific details and feelings. Finally, they will practice rereading and changing parts of their poems to express themselves clearly.
Math
Before we delve into Unit 7, the students will review the concepts introduced in chapters 1-6 and strengthen the learned skills and strategies. They will work in small groups and create anchor charts for various skills and concepts they have learned so far this year. Then, each group will get a chance to present to the class. This is fun way to review and practice what they've learned.
Students will then begin Unit 7, Metric Measurement of Length, mid week. The Second Graders will learn to estimate and measure medium and short lengths using the standard metric units of meters (m), and centimeters (cm). Using these standard units of measure, the students will compare various lengths. They will apply the addition and subtraction skills and strategies, such as bar models, taught earlier to real-world problems involving metric length.
Unit 7 Metric Measurement of Length
Introduction - recalling prior knowledge
- Find and compare length in non-standard units (First Grade)
- Adding and subtracting without regrouping (chapters 2 and 3)
- Adding and subtracting with regrouping (chapters 2 and 3)
Science
We will be very busy during Science. First, The students will revisit the three states of matter; solid, liquid, and gas. Using the website BrainPop Jr., they will be introduced to the differences between physical and chemical changes and how they affect matter. Using different types of candy with varying melting points, the students will investigate how some solids can change into a liquid. Then, once changed, its form can be modified into a different looking solid. This process will give them hands-on experience creating a physical change.
