Message to families
Mariner Family,
We have two new members to introduce to our Mariner Family. Armando Ramos is our new Campus Supervisor and will contribute to the safety and welcoming environment at Innovative Horizons Charter School. Sadura Patton is our new Think Together Coordinator and will continue to build success for our students, along with her staff, in our after-school program. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Ramos and Ms. Patton to our Mariner Family.
We have two additional Mariner family members to celebrate this week as it is Counselor Appreciation Week! Please share your beautiful smile and your kind words of appreciation for Mrs. Espinoza and Mrs. Singh this week, and always. Every student deserves the opportunity to have a champion in their corner. A person who is rooting for them and believes in them and celebrates their every success. Thank you Mrs. Espinoza and Mrs. Singh, for being a champion to all.
Mariner Family, continue to do the good work that you are doing each day. It matters. Know that we are a stronger school and a better community when we work together to serve students each day. “Together” is the key word. Let’s continue to be here for each other and understand that each day that we work together to build each student up, we are changing our world in a good way. Let’s continue to build our school together. Our school should be a place that we all want to come to each day. A place that we all love coming to each day.
Students, do you love YOUR SCHOOL? Parents, do you love YOUR SCHOOL? Mariner Staff, do you love YOUR SCHOOL?
I LOVE OUR SCHOOL!
In Partnership,
Mr. Candelaria, Principal
Innovative Horizons Charter School, at Nan Sanders

February is American Heart Month. “President Lyndon B. Johnson, among the millions of people in the country who'd had heart attacks, issued the first proclamation in 1964. Since then, U.S. presidents have annually declared February American Heart Month,” (www.heart.org) The purpose of American Heart month is to raise awareness of heart disease, which is the number one killer of Americans today.
As teachers and parents, we can help by educating our students about cardiovascular health. PE Teachers start in kindergarten and through all grade levels teach about the importance of taking care of our hearts. It starts with understanding how the heart works. We discuss how it pumps oxygen throughout our body to create movement. We focus on the idea that the heart is the most important muscle in our body, and that to get it and keep it strong it needs to exercise. We also talk about nutrition and the 5 food groups. There are great heart healthy foods that help keep our heart strong. Click here to get 8 steps to a heart healthy diet to prevent heart disease. So to truly prevent heart disease it is a combination of daily exercise and a healthy diet. Let’s work together and “Build Strong Hearts…Inside and Out!”
Computer Time
We are blessed to offer our students STEM education here at IHCS. 100% of K-5 students attend STEM classes weekly, and all Middle School students who choose this as their elective attend daily for a semester. In December we celebrated Computer Science Education week and had all students in STEM complete at least one hour of code. Computer science is about logic, problem solving, and creativity and we see these skills spill over into reading, writing, math and science. To learn about all the benefits of learning to code please visit this link. We at IHCS are preparing all students for successful futures by providing them with foundational computer science skills.
