Mrs. Franke and Mrs. deLeon's 5th Grade Class
We have started literature circles! The students were assigned a book and will be completing different "role" sheets to bring to their group meetings. The groups will discuss their books 2-3 times a week. We are working on having an open deep-level conversation about our thinking while we are reading. The literature circles will help foster the children's ability to discuss their opinions and thoughts about their reading in an open forum.
The students have started working on their final and independent persuasive/opinion paper. The students got to decide what they would like to write about. We have a wide variety of topics and we are excited to see their growth in this genre of writing.
We have started looking at polygons: classifying triangles and quadrilaterals. The students will next be working on measuring and drawing angles using a protractor.
We have started our matter and chemistry unit. Most of the homework that goes along with this unit is found on Discovery Education on assignment boards that have been posted to your child's account. Along with educational videos, the students need to do some reading in their book to ready them for the next day's activities. Throughout this unit, we will be working with an experiment called "Mystery Powders" in which the students will need to decide what powders are mixed together in the end.
We will be doing our mid-year MAPS testing on Wednesday 1/13 (Reading) at 10:30 and Tuesday 1/19 (Math) at 12:45. Please try to schedule appointments around these times.
We will be having our classroom Spelling Bee On January 20th and 21st. The winners of our classroom bee will participate in the school-wide bee on January 29th.
The annual Parkview Winter Carnival is coming up soon! This is the PTA's biggest fundraiser. The PTA has asked each grade level to provide a themed basket to raffle off at this big event. This year the 5th grade is in charge of creating a Lottery Tree. We are asking for cash donations towards the purchase of the lottery tickets. You can send the donations to school with your child to give to the teacher. We ask that you send it in no later than January 25th, so that the room moms are able to purchase the items needed. Thank you in advance and we look forward to seeing you there! Who knows maybe you could be the one to strike it big with the Lotto Tree!
Your Room Moms,
Amanda Evanoff and Jan Weber
