RMS Weekly Event Calendar
February 4 - February 8
What's going on at RMS?
But....it didn't happen. We woke up to, well let's say...nuttin! All we saw outside was the same brown grass we have been looking at over the past several weeks. How disappointing for many! Nothing to play in. No snow men to build. No sledding down the hills. What a bust!
But no big deal....right? Apparently not everyone felt that way. Later that day, I watched James Spann, a well known meteorologist, discuss many of the bad, negative tweets that he received after a day with no snow. The tweets were ugly...including many with profanity that called him terrible names. One tweet he showed even suggested that he go somewhere....and it wasn't to Heaven. The tweets were degrading, disrespectful, and demoralizing.
Wow...do we live in a time where it is terrible to make a mistake and if we do make a mistake, everyone has a right to attack us? It makes perfect sense why our students have a fixed mindset instead of a growth mindset. How did we get like this? How did we become so harsh and cruel? What happened to the attributes of kindness, respect, courtesy, and understanding? My best guess is that these are no longer being taught or modeled in most homes across our nation.
Kindness is taught through example and high expectations for positive behavior. It is shown through our actions, conversations, and how we treat each other. It is instilled through the heart of compassion and consideration. As educators, we work each day to educate the minds of our students; however, to truly prepare our students to be a productive member of society, we must also educate them on the attributes of the heart. We must instill in our students the importance of kindness, courtesy, honesty, integrity, and compassion. But I can assure you on one thing, we cannot fool our students. Rather than do what we say, children do what they see. They learn the behaviors from the adults they come in contact with. What a great opportunity we have to teach children through our actions. Let us all strive to be the positive roll model for students so that we can not only teach them, but instill in them the gifts of the heart.
Although many people were so critical and cruel to James Spann for his "lack of delivery" of snow, my belief is that he used his best equipment, his years of experience and training, and all the resources available to him to do his best job at "predicting" the forecast of snow. But at the end of the day, most people forget that there is no man/woman who has control over the weather. In fact, I only know one person who does, and it isn't James Spann!
