President's Message
Happy Spring Break Hiteon Families!
We hope you have been able to spend the week enjoying the beautiful weather and your families. Things are moving along at Hiteon. Teachers are beginning to welcome help back into their classrooms, Art Lit has their first meeting on April 5th, Science Fair Projects are due April 6th, and plans have begun for an in person Fun Run in May. For more information on how you can participate, please see info in individual articles below.
Finally, as our parent organizations have already done, we as a PTC would like to express our shock and concern over the unwarranted attack of Russia on a peaceful Ukraine. Seeing the terrible images of war and refugees fleeing brings feelings of empathy for the suffering of the Ukrainian people and of gratefulness for the relative peace in our little community. Here is one resource for ideas of how to talk with your kids about the conflict: https://www.npr.org/2019/04/24/716704917/when-the-news-is-scary-what-to-say-to-kids

Green Team Corner
Green Team has had a fantastic year so far, including at our most recent meeting where two park rangers from Glacier Bay National Park zoomed with us to answer our questions and introduce us to the park's wildlife and ecology!
Here are some takeaways and favorite things we learned:
A baby porcupine is called a porcupette!! And, even though they're super cute, don't pet one! Those spines are still super sharp, even as babies.
The green team LOVES sea otters - they spend their days in the water eating urchins, clams and other shellfish. The water is super cold (34-38 degrees F), but they don't use blubber to stay warm like seals or sea otters. Instead, their fur is super dense, with as many as 1 million hairs per square inch!
Where the glaciers meet the sea, they sometimes break off large pieces of ice in a process known as calving. These are then known as icebergs.
If you have a 4th grader, they are eligible for the Every Kid in a Park program. This federal program gets all 4th grade students and their families into all parks within the National Park system through August after their 4th grade year, including the well known National parks like Glacier NP and Crater Lake NP, but also lesser known parks like Lewis and Clark in Astoria, the John Day Fossil beds, even Yaquina Head Natural Area in Newport! Get your pass today - it's completely free!
Author Visit Coming Soon!
Local author and current Hiteon parent, Carrie Tillotson, will be visiting Hiteon with a virtual author visit in May! She will talk about her picture book, Counting to Bananas: A Mostly Rhyming Fruit Book, due out April 12, 2022, as well as her nonfiction magazine writing.
Find out more about Carrie at her website, and keep your eyes peeled for a flyer and an opportunity to order signed books in advance of the visit, coming soon.

Diversity and Inclusion Committee
Purim was on Wednesday, March 16th. This Jewish holiday is filled with food, costumes, sharing gifts with friends, and giving back to the community. Celebrating Purim is celebrating the bravery of Queen Esther. There is a great video that families can watch together to learn more - The Story of Purim: A Comic Book Video! Booo or make noise whenever you hear the name “Haman”!
One of the traditions of Purim is making and eating hamantaschen, a triangular pastry that commemorates the hat that Haman wore. Check out some hamantaschen recipes (here and here). Make a bunch of hamantaschen to share with your friends and family over Spring Break.

We would love for a parent or guardian to help write these featured celebrations each month. Interested? Please contact the Diversity & Inclusion Committee to offer your assistance or join us on April 12th at 6:30PM on Zoom. The meeting information will be posted on the Hiteon PTC calendar and Facebook page.
