SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT: HOPE ELEMENTARY
What’s Happening at Hope?
Hope’s Friday Assemblies
Parents and families are invited to attend Hope’s fun, community-building Friday assemblies. After the Pledge of Allegiance there is a discussion of the Character Trait of the Month, and the handing out of Character awards (one grade level per week). The kids call out, "I am proud of you," to the award winners, because it is important that they champion each other. The assemblies always end with a happy piece of choreography. First, the students look at their teacher, flex their muscles, and exclaim, "I will work hard." Next, they make a heart sign with their hands, look at a peer, and shout, "I will be kind." Then they give a peace sign, look at their principal, and yell, "I will be safe." Finally, as loud as they can, the students bellow, "We will have fun!"
Lancer Day in Carlsbad
Today Carlsbad High School held its 63rd annual Lancer Day parade as part of the school’s Homecoming celebration. Students, families, and staff across the district also took part, and Hope Elementary was no exception. A team of 5th graders, Henry the Hawk, and Hope principal Ashley Rossiter participated in the community tradition, joining contingents from the other Carlsbad schools to march through Carlsbad Village to kick off the CHS Homecoming weekend. Go Lancers!
Cyber Education and Social Media Security
This week Hope was fortunate to host Jon Moffat, a cyber expert and educator, who presented a talk on Cyber Education and Social Media Security for parents. Mr. Moffat spoke of the potential dangers in the digital world, and how parents can protect their children. He recommended keeping current on the latest apps available to young people on their phones, setting boundaries for children on devices, and using privacy settings. He also shared information about popular social media platforms, such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Tiktok. And he offered solutions for protecting a family's digital reputation, and tools for creating a family technology contract. He also conducted two student assemblies, one for 2nd and 3rd graders, and one for 4th and 5th graders, teaching them about the importance of digital citizenship and online safety. Parents appreciated Mr. Moffat’s sharing of his expertise as they work to build a healthy relationship with technology at home.
Hope Read-a-Thon
The Hope Read-a-Thon is a program that encourages children to read more while raising funds to support instructional programs on campus. Students will set daily “reading time” goals, which may include reading, or being read to, from any books or online reading sources, as long as the reading occurs outside of the regular school day. The students then will ask family and friends to sponsor their reading efforts with contributions tied to the students’ success in meeting their reading goals. From October 10 to 23 students will record their actual daily reading time as they strive to reach their targets. All funds raised will support instructional programs at Hope throughout the year.
Monster Mash
The Hope Hawks community is thrilled that the MONSTER MASH is coming back. After a two-year break, the school’s favorite party will be held on October 22. Students in scary, funny, boo-tiful costumes will roam the spooky campus with friends and families. There will be games, a DJ, dancing, food trucks, Trunk or Treat, and spooky fun for all. The Monster Mash is Hope PTA's biggest fundraiser of the year.
The Hope Hawks are soaring with enthusiasm and inspiration!
