Keynote Speaker: David J. O'Connor (Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa), American Indian Studies Consultant, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
David O’Connor is originally from and is a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe) in northern Wisconsin. In January 2012, he became the American Indian Studies Consultant at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. He is also one of the co-leaders for the Disproportionality Technical Assistance Network or “The Network”. In David’s role at the department, he supports school districts’ efforts to provide instruction on the history, culture, and tribal sovereignty of Wisconsin’s American Indian nations and tribal communities, also known as Wisconsin Act 31. In addition, he provides training opportunities and presents at conferences and workshops throughout the state of Wisconsin on American Indian Studies & Wisconsin Act 31.
David is also responsible for American Indian Language and Culture Education, such as the American Indian Language Revitalization Grants, which supports school districts or CESAs who partner with a tribal government to provide instruction on teaching and learning of tribal languages. He also develops and disseminate materials on American Indian Studies & Wisconsin Act 31. David also provides general consultation on issues related the education of American Indian students. He also serves as liaison to Wisconsin tribal education departments, Wisconsin Indian Education Association (WIEA), and Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council (GLITC), and Special Committee on State-Tribal Relations.
