PK 3.1 Weekly Newsletter
January 29, 2015- Week 20/ Buildings
Hello Pk Parents,
I hope you've all had a wonderful week. Inside Pk3.1 we began our buildings unit! After our flag ceremony on Monday, we came into class and asked our first question “Which building do you like more?" the kids were asked to come up and mark which one they liked and explain “why?”. We talked about the different types of buildings we may see (school, house, hospital, office, mall, store, etc.) We had Gross Motor Development with Ms. Sharon where the kids practiced sharing and passing a ball with a friend. Monday was also Luciana's birthday, her mom brought in cupcakes to share and celebrate with the class! We read “The 3 Little Pigs” to end the day. On Tuesday our question was “Which would you use to build your house?” I lined up 3 different types of materials that the 3 little pigs used to build they homes in the story and again the children came up and marked their choices with an explanation why. Most the kids picked “brick” but I did have a few who went with “sticks” or “straw” (simply for the color yellow!) We went off to our small groups and they discovered a few new activities that had been added. In the library we had a “story-line” with printed out the picture from the book “The 3 Little Pigs”. The kids were able to use clothespins to place the pictures in the correct order. This was a good memory activity along with a chance to practice their fine motor skills. Ms. Giselle had a center called “Let’s Go Fishing” where the kids used a magnet and paperclips to catch fish. Wednesday our question was “How many doors do we have in the classroom?” We all made predictions and then walked around the class counting every door, big or small. The kids were shocked to learn that we had so many including all the cabinet, refrigerator and microwave doors. I talked about the different hardware (door handles and hinges) and the different materials the doors in the class were made of (metal, wood, plastic). After playing in our centers we took a little field trip to the PAC to look at the newest building here at ISP. The kids sat outside and drew what they liked most about the building. After our centers we went to garden and watered our plants. Ms. Sharon also had sand center open this week. On Thursday our question was “How many windows are inside the classroom?” We first discussed what exactly a window was, what was it made of? Do they open? Are they all square? What other shapes could they be? We then walked around the class making our predictions on how many were inside the class. After playground, we went inside to act out the story “The 3 Little Pigs”. Fridays question was “what do you want to learn about buildings?” I showed the pictures some of you sent in and discussed different floors/stories of buildings and we looked for windows and doors and discovered that all of our houses have at least one window and one door! We ended the day acting out the story again with 3 new little pigs and one new wolf (We will continue acting out the story until everyone has had a chance to be in the play.) I hope your kids had a wonderful week! Please share the pictures below and don’t forget that next week is SPIRIT WEEK!!
