What is the Scientific Method
The Scientific Method is a set of steps used by the Scientific Community to organize thoughts in order to solve or investigate problems
Steps of the Scientific Method
1. Identify the problems and make observation
2. Form a Hypothesis
3. Design an Experiment
4. Test you Hypothesis
5. Draw Conclusions
Identify the Problems and make Observation
- This is always the First Step
- Ask Yourself: What am I trying to figure out in this investigation and What can I lear through my Observations?
Form a Hypothesis
- Form a Hypothesis based upon the Research and/or Previous Knowledge
- Always a Questions
- Usually IF...THEN...BECAUSE
Design an Experiment
- Design an Experiment to test your Hypothesis
- If Hypothesis is Impossible, then you don't have a good Hypothesis
- If Hypothesis is possible, then you have a good Hypothesis.
Test Your Hypothesis
Parts of an Experiment:
- Control
- Constant
- Variables
- Independent
- Dependent
- Replication (Repeating the experiment MANY times)
Draw Conclusions
- Make Observations and Collect Data
- Involves taking notes, measurements, as you are conducting your experiments.
- Analyze Data (What is the Data Telling You?)
- Ask the Questions: Was the Hypothesis supported by the Data and Should a new hypothesis be made and tested.
Example: The Effect of Volumes of Music to Vibration of Liquid
Step 1: What am I trying to Figure Out: If the difference in Music Volume effects the amount of Vibrations on Liquid.
Step 2: Make Hypothesis: If the volume of Music is increased, then the vibrations shown on a Liquid substance will increase, because vibrations deal with decibels.
Step 3: Design Experiment: Make Sure the Music Source is at most 5 inches from the water source.
Step 4: Test Hypothesis: Conduct the Experiment by exposing the liquid to different volumes of music.
Step 5: Draw Conclusions: Due to the data pulled from the experiment, it is safe to conclude that the volume does have the effect we were looking for. Note: Try Experimenting with different types of genres.
