Changing the Headlines... Allendale Forward
Walmart Partners with ACS
Allendale-Fairfax Middle School was the recipient of a $15,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation. The funds from this grant will be used to fund literacy programs and initiatives for the middle school.
“I need each of you all to go above and beyond,” said Sonya Rozier, the newly promoted store manager of the Walmart in Barnwell, SC.
In 2018, the District rolled out its new 3-Year Strategic Plan goals with the help of parents, students, and local community members. One of the goals of the school district is to develop partnerships with local businesses, industries and faith-based organizations. Now the District takes great pride in having developed over thirty partnerships that assist in providing successful student outcomes for the students of Allendale County.
Not only has the District partnered with some industry titans like Collum’s Lumber Company, Swiss Krono and Georgia Pacific, but the local government also. The outcomes from these partnerships include, but aren’t limited to apprenticeships, funding for academic programs and school supplies for the District’s annual Back to School Bash.
This year, the District has increased its focus on improving literacy for its students to close the literacy gap. When addressing the students about the academic goals she has set for them,Superintendent Dr. Gilmore said, “You all can do this; I know you can.”
Student Spotlight: Kayla Allen
This astute scholar has certainly taking steps in the right direction to make her ultimate dream of opening her own pharmacy someday. This dream stemmed from falling loving with researching medication for her grandmother after she became ill during the 2018-2019 school term. After connecting with a Biochemistry professor during a campus visit, Allen decided she would make the University of South Carolina Aiken her next stop.
Allen attributes part her success thus far to having faculty and staff members who have motivated her when she felt like giving up the most. Congratulations, Kayla!

Outstanding Teachers of the Month
Mr. Jim Shuman – February
Allendale-Fairfax High School
"Mr. Shuman is our data guru. He is always willing to help our teachers integrate technology and data into their classes. He is our "go to" teacher. He is always willing to provide professional learning, assist with testing, and supporting whomever needs assistance. He is the head football coach and requires that all his players attend study sessions before practice. He knows each of his players i-READY reading and math levels. He always provides extra assistance to students and staff."
Mr. Terry Pinckney – January
Allendale-Fairfax Middle School
"Mr. Pinckney could write a book on how to apply State Standards to real life situations. If you entered Mr. Pinckney's classroom, you would find him teaching students how to make online resumes in live presentations. How to research salary as it compares to cost of living. How to generate a QR Code in place of a business card. The proof of the rigor in his classroom is in his most current victory. Allendale Fairfax Middle School students entered a multi-district competition called Go-1.T. App challenge in conjunction with DIG sponsored by Mr. Steven Brown. Mr. Pinckney led a group of students to 1st, 3rd and 4th placed finishes. The first placed finishers created a user-friendly app to help parents conquer the multiple challenges that comes along with students playing sports. Mr. Pinckney also has a very special talent with classroom management. Mr. Pinckney has several skills that propel his influence beyond the classroom. His students call him Mr. Pinckney. His student athletes call him Coach Pinckney. And the adult staff affectionately calls him Cousin Pinckney."
Mr. Miguel Lawrence – November
Fairfax Elementary School
"Mr. Lawrence has made a great impact on students and learning at Fairfax Elementary School. Mr. Lawrence is very punctual Educator. He is at work on time and submits his work in a timely fashion. Mr. Lawrence class is very engaging. His scholars are very excited about getting to class on a daily basis; as well as parents expressing their appreciation for him. We are glad for to have him a part of the Baby Tiger Family!"
