May Newsletter

Dear Van Brunt Families,

Can you believe it is May? The school year is flying by! We have had a busy and fun filled month at Van Brunt! Students enjoyed being part of the art and science fair and high interest day. Third through sixth graders enjoyed watching their classmates in the Creative Dramatics presentation at the high school.

I would like to extend a big thank you to all of the Van Brunt families, students, staff, and PTO for another great year. Such wonderful things can happen when we have strong partnerships and everyone working together for the success of our students. We appreciate your dedication and willingness to give of your time and resources to help make Van Brunt a great place to learn and grow!!

Congratulations to our 6th graders who will be moving up to the junior high!! Van Brunt will not be the same without them!! We wish our 6th graders all the best and know they will continue to find success in all they do!

I wish you all a very happy and safe summer!

Thank You Van Brunt Teachers!!

May 8-12 is Teacher Appreciation Week.

I am so thankful to have such wonderful staff working with our students every day! Our teachers are extremely dedicated and spend countless hours preparing engaging lessons for the students, attending school events, and working to create a positive learning environment for our students. Thank you!!

Grading for Learning

At Van Brunt Elementary, we are transitioning to a standards-based report card and grading for learning practices. The new report cards will be introduced in the 2017-2018 school year. We are moving to standards based reporting in an effort to provide more meaningful feedback to students and parents to show growth on important learning targets and standards.

A standards-based report card lists the most important skills that students need to learn in each subject area at a particular grade level. This type of grading measures a student's mastery of standards. Grades are not averaged, as they are in traditional grading systems.

Standards-based reporting gives a more accurate picture of what a student actually knows about concepts. There will be multiple opportunities for your child to show evidence of learning prior to a standard being assessed. Students will be provided with feedback and opportunities to relearn and redo assignments to deepen their understanding. As a staff, we are working to create grading scales and rubrics that the students will use to help guide their learning.

Academic performance will be reported separately from work habits or behavior in order to provide a more accurate view of a student’s progress in both academic and behavioral areas.

As we continue work in this area, more information will be provided. We are planning to share information at open house as well as host informational nights where families can learn more about the advantages of grading for learning.

High Interest Day

High Interest day was a fun day for our students to explore different areas of interest in a hands-on manner. Students enjoyed learning about the arts, science, sports and recreation. Thank you to Kimmy Weggeland and the PTO for organizing this event for our students.

Van Brunt Fun Run

We are so excited about Van Brunt Fun Run: Bookin' it for Books! The actual run isn't until September but we have an awesome group of parents/staff helping plan this event right now and we would love your help!

We are looking for financial sponsors to offset the cost of the run so more of the funds raised can go directly to our students in the form of books. We have four levels of sponsorship: Gold ($500+), Silver ($250+) and Bronze ($100+). If you are interested in sponsoring this awesome event please contact Cynthia Borgstrom at 920-485-4423 or email Thank you to Vic's Autobody of Horicon for our first sponsorship! We appreciate your support!

We are also looking for PARENT VOLUNTEERS on the day of the event, September 27th. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Jenni Vorlob at
