Last Friday night the Steers hit the ground running, with four of them setting new PR's in temps over 100 degrees at the Friday Night Hawk Invitational. Our top female runner was our Senior and 4-year Varsity runner, Janet Watson. Due to the heat, they combined her Varsity race with the Varsity Elite girl's race. Janet placed 6th overall (139 runners) and 3rd in the Varsity girls setting a new XC PR of 12:43-2mile run. Our top male runner is also our newest freshman, Octavio Rodriguez-Salas who's attending Marine Creek Collegiate. Octavio, placed 20th in the JV division out of 198 boys, setting a new PR of 12:07-2mile run.

The JV Steers traveled to Carter-Riverside on 8/23 and defeated them 12-0. Quarterback Isaiah Taylor ran for a touchdown, Running-Back Justin Lopez ran for a touchdown, and the defense was led by Daniel (Megatron) Martinez with several tackles and an interception. JV Steers sit at 1-0!

The Varsity Steers went out and defeated Dallas Roosevelt 36-0 yesterday at Farrington Field. The offense was led by Quarterback Kevin Ortega with 2 rushing touchdowns and DeAndre Montgomery with 3 Rushing touchdowns. Lorenzo Perez led the receiving core and Rudy Fernandez led the charge on the offensive line.

The Steers scored more points (36) than Dallas Roosevelt had on offense (31 total yards). The defense was led by Jay Bryant on the defensive line, Adrian Rojas led the linebackers in tackles, and the secondary gave up only 20 passing yards on the evening. Varsity Steers are 1-0!

One more week, that is all we have to wait for the Friday Night Lights! Putting a close to the preseason, we have a scrimmage between the South Hills Scorpions and the Lake Country Eagles. This game was a battle on both sides of the ball, with both teams really digging in and getting after it. The Scorpions passing attack really started heating up in the 2nd quarter, led by Senior signal caller Fernando Campos #1. Campos showed real comfort in the pocket starting out hot with a 40-yard dart to get the Scorpions going on offence. The defense was heating up as well, with the Scorpions coming away with an interception and a pick-six by Gerardo Rocha to keep the Scorpions in the game. The Eagles responded well though, Finishing the scrimmage strong with a late passing touchdown to seal the deal for the Eagles. The Eagles have a good outlook on the season ahead of them, with their first regular season game coming against the Cathedral Fighting Irish. Head coach Wade Whites was quoted as saying “We’ve got a great core of guys that have come together pretty good as a family” so the future for the Eagles seems to be bright. The Scorpions are looking for a win against the Molina Jaguars next week for their first regular season game, hoping to bounce back from the loss last year. South Hills has some great talent especially on the defensive side of the ball, and the Future seems bright.

JV Cougar Football team traveled an hour and a half to Maypearl last night. Sadly, after a long tough (108 degree) fight through the game the Cougars came up short losing 20-14. We were up 14-12 until the last 3 minutes of the game. We were led by Joshua Oliver and Ashton Berry who both broke two long runs. Alex Richmond was the work horse of the night playing both sides and commanding the Cougars offense and getting us our two point conversion. Defensively we were led by Alvin Wilson, Josh Raga, Ethan Davis and Jeremiah Armstead Leonard who had multiple sacks and tackles for a loss. Braden Burns forced a fumble in the third quarter that was picked up by Tim Clark.

Tough match against Chisholm Trail High School, but we couldn't be prouder of our team! PHS lost by only two matches, this is closest match we've had against Chisholm in the past 4 years. Our kids fought hard and left it all on the court. This loss only fuels our determination to come back stronger next week against Trinity High School. Thanks to everyone who cheered us on – your support means the world! #PHSTennis #PanthersProud #OnToTheNextOne
