PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Bidwell Families,
I’m pleased to report that we have had a smooth start to the 18-19 school year, thanks to your amazing kiddos and our fabulous staff. Working together, promoting and living out the vision of The Bidwell Way is creating a safer, friendlier, kinder junior high culture for all of our kiddos. I know a few of you have had a rough spell or two, but I feel like your proactive communication allowed us to jump on the problem right away before it got out of hand. As promised at the end of last year, as well as in early communications this year, we’re not going to have a lot of tolerance for flagrant and habitual disrespect/defiance. That kind of behavior, left unchecked, doesn’t help us bring out the best in each other. I have observed and had staff report to me many times of occasions when students appropriately redirected peers by respectfully telling them, “Hey, we don’t talk like that here,” or “That’s not how we do things here.” That is the kind of assertive, ally-promoting environment that empowers our kids to take ownership of their school. When students feel safe and happy at school, quality learning is immanent. Please help us promote The Bidwell Way by checking in with your students about their perceptions of peer interactions and giving them tools to appropriately assert themselves—including how to be an ally to a fellow student who may be experiencing some negative behaviors from others.
Keep checking Aeries and talking about your students’ progress in classes on a regular basis. Just a couple of minutes a day checking in can work wonders in helping a student stay on track. Keep an eye on those backpacks! I’m already hearing about 25-pound backpacks. They should be no more than 15 pounds. If it’s heavier than 15 pounds, keep taking stuff out until it’s 15 pounds or less. Please communicate with teachers directly if you have any concerns or questions. They are the most “in the know” about your students and, as such, can provide the most accurate information.
It is a joy to work with your kids every day. Thank you for being such an involved, caring community.
Respectfully,
David S. McKay

FORGOTTEN ITEMS
Just a reminder as dress-down days and swim season start in PE, the main office does not run passes for forgotten items. We cannot continue to interrupt classes with the number of items we have dropped off in the office daily. Students have been reminded repeatedly in the Daily Bulletin to check up front if they have forgotten an item. Please remember to communicate with your student before school and ensure they have all the items they will need for their school day. Part of the development of student responsibility is dealing with the consequences of forgotten items.

OFF-CAMPUS PERMITS and VISITOR PASSES
Just a reminder, if you are signing your student off campus for any reason, you MUST stop in the main office first and check in with attendance. When ill, students are to check in with the school nurse, who verifies that the student is ill and calls home for the student to be picked up. Students are NOT to use their cell phones to call home during the day for any reason, especially illness. We must know when students are leaving campus at any time during the school day.
Additionally, if you are coming onto campus for any reason before, during, or after the school day, you must sign in on the Visitor clipboard in the main office and get a Visitor sticker. To ensure the safety of our students, we must know that every adult on campus has checked in through the office. Students from other schools are not allowed to be on campus during the school day for any reason.
FEEL GOOD FRIDAY VIDEO SERIES
As part of an inspirational video tradition in Ms. Purl's English classes, students watched a short video on a middle schooler who made it his mission to end the bullying he had endured for years. With help from some very special friends, this young man was able to stand up for himself, and more importantly, stand up for everyone that has ever been bullied in their lifetime. Using this young man's drive to take control, Bidwell students then took time to write down (on a post-it) what inspires them to be unstoppable. To their surprise, students found encouraging words, waiting for them on the board, from their parents and guardians that were left behind on Back to School Night!!

EARLY BEDTIMES ARE IMPORTANT!
Research by the American Academy of Pediatrics says that kids who sleep the recommended # of hours have improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, and mental and physical health.
When kids are in bed early, parents do better, too. A recent study showed that parents whose school-aged kids were in bed by 8:30 p.m. had better mental health!
Tips for getting kids to sleep better
Number 1: Set a regular bedtime routine. In our house, that means a book, and hug but it can be anything that works for your family — as long as you’re consistent.
Number 2: Shut off screens 2 hours before bedtime. The blue light emitted from screens can delay the release of sleep-inducing melatonin. Screens make our kiddos perk up and tell their internal clock it’s not sleep time yet. So as you get ready for the bedtime slog tonight, remember it’s never too early (or too late) to start setting good sleep habits. The whole family will reap the benefits!
