Reflections From the Principal
With that being said, I would also encourage you to make sure your students in your classes are aware of their current grade in your class. I find that being proactive and reminding students of their grade in your class prior to grade cards being distributed is very helpful.
Lastly, brace yourself for the "2020 Oreo March Madness" in the teacher's lounge beginning this week! Which flavored oreos will make it to the final four? Stay tuned!
Have a great week!

Great Things I Saw This Week
As I was walking by Ms. Baker's classroom, I heard music so I had to stop! Students were singing "Soy Guapo" as a bell ringer at the beginning of the class period. After singing, students were learning about adjectives in Spanish and were able to relate back to words from the song. Great way to incorporate music, Ms. Baker!
Congratulations to Hallie Swenson, who earned a GOLD rating from the state solo and ensemble contest! Great job, Ms. Pate!
At 7 am on Tuesday morning this week, I couldn't help but notice the light on in Mr. Smith's classroom. I stopped in to find Mr. Smith had donuts and milk, along with our high school math academic super bowl team who were working hard on math problems in preparation for the academic super bowl! Thank you, Mr. Smith!
Last but not least, I had the chance to visit elective PE one day this week. I don't always have the opportunity to see students in our elective PE class and I enjoyed watching Mr. Bolin work with them for a few minutes. Thank you, Mr. Bolin!
Kindness Alert!
Thanks to all for a great FFA week! Great job, Mr. Miller!

She never fails to make me smile, make me feel important, or help me continue on when I want to give up. With the skills that I learned in Mrs. Mccarty’s class I can make all of my dreams come true and more.”

“Mrs. McCarty has the most kind and caring personality. Whether it be troubles with an art project or if I needed guidance in life, I knew she would always be there for advice. She has never failed to brighten my day and she will always be a woman I look up to. We love you Mrs. McCarty!”

SEL Coordinator, #MustangMindset
The second SEL competency is Regulation. Regulation refers to the ability to recognize and manage one’s emotions. Regulation skills build positive self-control, positive self-discipline, and impulse control. The purpose of modeling & teaching regulation to our students is to keep students in the classroom and in school. In addition, regulation can give students the opportunity to be taught the critical life skill of self-regulation. A great deal of our students have not been taught or have not had an adult model for them what healthy self-regulation looks like. By making regulation an emphasis in our district, we can help teach that to our students, which will make them more successful. Modeling regulation also supports the Trauma Informed approach. The Trauma Informed approach seeks to understand trauma, and how trauma affects victims’ response to services and the schooling process, and the individual’s response to victims. This is important because we have students with several ACE’s (adverse childhood experiences) that dictate their actions and reactions. Understanding when a student is dysregulated is important to classroom management and academic achievement. A focus on regulation also helps teachers with a behavior support plan for those students who need extra support.
Regulation can look different from classroom to classroom and from grade to grade, but there are a TON of resources for helping to model self-regulation and for bringing regulation into your classroom without taking away from your content. For some it may be a regulation station, where they have an area of their classroom sectioned off for regulation purposes. For others, it might just be a regulation basket with items that students can use. We have staff, in both buildings, who utilize both of these options who are great resources to talk with about regulation. The SEL Toolkit has several activities and ideas for promoting regulation within your classroom. In addition, the staff resources folder on my homepage also has options for regulation and regulation stations. The IDOE has also given indicators and strategies for each grade level on regulation HERE (pg32).
Mrs. Peterson shared with me this GREAT resource for a regulation space/activities in your classroom. It comes with all the stuff you need and she says it takes hardly any set up!
As with any classroom procedure you have, it is important that whatever you use to reinforce regulation is modeled to your students! If you need any help with that, please let me know.
If you have any questions or need anything from me, please don’t hesitate to ask!
