Chancellor Charger Weekly Update
News You Can Use for the Week Beginning October 19, 2020
From the Principal
Greeting Chancellor Chargers,
It was great having students return to the building for in-person instruction and by all measures, students handled navigating the halls and acclimating to COVID-19 social distancing guidelines with grace and patience. Thank you parents and students for your cooperation. We are continuing to adjust procedures and plans as necessary to ensure that students are safe. Students must continue to wear a mask and bring their SCPS issued Chromebook/laptop (if they received one), charger, and earbuds to school.
This week students will participate in a fire drill on Monday (for students attending Mon. & Tues) and Thursday (for students attending Thurs. & Fri.) as well as a lockdown drill on Tuesday (for students attending Mon. & Tues) and Friday (for students attending Thurs. & Fri.). Both drills are mandated by the State of Virginia. Teachers will go over procedures and expectations for each type of drill as there have been modifications made due to COVID--19. We look forward to continuing to work with you this year. Have a great week!
Leading the Charge!

Senior Make-up Pictures and Retakes are scheduled for October 20th and 22nd from 9 am - 4 pm. Lifetouch/Prestige should have sent scheduled times to all students scheduled for a makeup portrait. If a senior still needs to schedule a makeup time, please reschedule with Prestige directly through their website, or by contacting our School Support Specialist Karen Kramer-Burrow directly at kkramb-burrow@lifetouch.com or 804-893-4971. Due to Covid restrictions, Prestige will no longer accept walk-up appointments.
Students should arrive on time. A disinfected tux or drape will be provided. If a student does not want to wear the clothes provided, he or she will need to wear formal attire, preferably black with a white shirt (if wearing the tux) or a black dress shirt or dress for females. Students should not wear headgear such as hats. Please note that these pictures are not cap and gown pictures, as many parents have not selected this option in the past.
Students must sit with Prestige/Lifetouch in order for their picture to appear in the yearbook. No purchase is necessary. We cannot accept photos from an outside photographer for the yearbook pose.
Social distancing guidelines will be followed. Once a student has completed his or her appointment, the student must either return to class if scheduled for hybrid instruction on the appointment day or leave the building due to Covid-19 restrictions.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
From a number of valuable perspectives, our school system experienced an overall successful transition to hybrid in-person learning this week!
While visiting many schools throughout the week, it was so wonderful to see and hear our students actively learning in-person. By all accounts, students did a great job of following and adapting to the new procedures required for safe in-person learning. Thank you to parents for helping to reinforce this both prior to and during the week.
I am humbled and deeply honored to lead and work alongside the absolute best teachers, school and division leaders, and support staff. Despite significant and persistent challenges, our people continue to lead, learn, and serve their hearts out for our students and families across the county. From the many on-site visits and collaborative work this week, it was clear that everyone was working hard, effectively, and with a genuine sense of joy in having students in our schools learning. In conversations with several teachers and school principals, most felt really pleased with the overall transition. Bus transportation, food service, maintenance, and health services meeting the continued challenges.
Instructional Technology Update: The Instructional Technology department worked through the weekend to ensure that the hotspots were ready for students and families. All pre-ordered hotspots were delivered to schools this week. If families still have a need for a hotspot, please contact your child’s school.
Though we were only one day in, our team shared another update with our school board this past Monday. You can view the presentation here and are also welcome to go online and view the entire meeting here.
If you haven’t already done so, please check out our Learning from Home resource parent and student website for distance learning information and resources. If you need help navigating the site, be sure to view the September Family Connection webinar.
Speaking of the Family Connection webinar, our next one will be live-streamed on Thursday, October 22 at 5:00 p.m. at https://www.regionalwebtv.com/family-connection. If you are unable to view it live, it will be recorded and posted at the same link for viewing at any time.
As a reminder, the COVID-19 Dashboard is updated weekly and you can view it in the Return to Learn section or by clicking this link: SCPS COVID-19 Dashboard.
Thank you again to our students and parents for your patience and support through this whole process. If your child needs support in transitioning to the hybrid in-person learning model, please reach out to your child’s schools.
Let’s have another great in-person and distance learning week!
Dr. S. Scott Baker
