Distance Learning Plans
Thank you for your patience and support over the last few weeks of the shelter in place. Our teachers have been working very hard to design developmentally appropriate, engaging, authentic, and equity-driven plans for your children. Shifting to a distance learning model overnight is incredibly challenging, as you can imagine. So much of the magic our teachers bring to the classroom every day is based on human interaction, building trust through relationships, and building structures for collaboration. Recreating that from afar is not a simple task.
Though our team feels an incredible sense of loss during this time (we are missing your kids deeply!), we also see opportunity in using this time to collaborate across grade level teams, to explore new technology, and to focus our precious learning time on what matters most. I have witnessed first-hand just how flexible, committed, and creative each and every one of our teachers is in their attempt to learn new technology and collaboratively design solid plans. In the MLA Distance Learning Overview (linked on the button below), you will find every grade level's plans. These are hot off the presses after weeks of exploration and collaboration -- please give your child's teacher some love and appreciation for the hard work they've done to make this happen. These plans will launch today, Thursday, April 9, 2020!
Please note -- what the plans do NOT describe, which we will share information about in our next bulletin, is how to access resource and speech services during the shelter in place. Thank you for your patience.
If you have questions about how to access your grade level's plans, please email your child's teacher directly.
With love,
Bri
Chromebook Pick-Ups
Hello MLA Families,
This week, OUSD announced that we will not be returning to school sites for the rest of the academic year. We are offering our students a lot of online learning opportunities, though we understand not everyone currently has devices or internet at home. The District continues to work on getting internet access to all who need it. In the meantime, we would like to lend computers to all families that need them.
Below is a schedule for families to come to school to pick up the technology they need. Please carefully read the following information to determine when you or your student should be prepared to come to school. We will distribute computers from the Maxwell campus.
Thursday, April 9:
- 8th Grade: 12-12:30pm
- 7th Grade: 12:30-1pm
- 6th Grade: 1-1:30pm
Friday, April 10:
- 4th-5th Grade: 12-12:30pm
- 2nd-3rd Grade: 12:30-1pm
- K-1st Grade: 1-1:30pm
We recognize that there may be families who are not able to come to the school during this time period. If this is the case, please email laura.kaneko@ousd.org or text 562-322-1857 and we will try to make arrangements that work with your schedule.
Medication
If you have medication that has been stored at either Maxwell or Sherman, please come to collect it during your assigned time.
Social Distancing at Pick up
Please remember that during pickup, social distancing is important. While I know that your children may be excited to see each other, for safety reasons, we ask that you keep at least 6 feet of space between your family and others, and be sure to properly cover all sneezes or coughs. If you are able to wear a mask, please do. If you or a member of your family are experiencing any symptoms for any illness, such as fever or respiratory issues, please remain at home and email laura.kaneko@ousd.org to make alternative arrangements. If you are over the age of 65 or have a compromised immune system, we encourage you to stay home.
During this event, the campus will be accessible only to staff members so tables will be set up in front of the school. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding during this incredibly difficult time.
