Another Week in 2nd Grade
We have had a pretty awesome week together in 2nd grade! I am so proud of my students for how hard they worked all week long on our many different activities. This is turning out to be a really great year. Please take a look at FSA Connect to view your child's progress report to see how they are progressing this year. I am very pleased with our class progress as a whole, and I can't wait to see the progress we make by the end of this semester.
Please read through our newsletter for important reminders and news for our upcoming week together.
As always, please email me if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Ms. Przedpelski
Important Information and Reminders
1. Pumpkin Projects:
Your child should have already picked out a chapter book for this project and be working on reading this book! Please make sure they are reading it consistently at home and school so they have plenty of time to complete the book report and decorate the pumpkin!
Each class will have a pumpkin contest WINNER! They will receive a free dress down day! :)
2. Field Trip Forms due this Thursday, October 22nd:
See more info below about our field trip to the Hillcrest Orchards on Friday, October 30th. Many of you have already sent in money and forms, if you have not... these are due by October 22nd for all students and chaperones! I am still missing MANY forms from our class.
3. Reading Logs/Reflections:
Remember.... usually students are required to read and complete 3 reflections. This month... your child's Pumpkin Book Report will count as one of their reading reflections. This report should be for their chapter book. They will only need to complete TWO reflections in class this month for the following:
- 1 Nonfiction Book
- 1 Book of Choice
Our Reading Logs/Reflections will be due on the last day of October (Friday, October 30th). Please remember that your student should be reading at home every night! If your child reads all three of their books, I will make sure they complete their reflections in class by the end of the month... so please encourage your students to read at home!
4. Uniform Reminder:
Please make sure your child comes to school in their proper uniform every day! Good Conduct dress down days will always be the 2nd Friday of every month. Unless you receive an e-mail from me about another special dress down day, your child should always be in their school uniform. Girls - please make sure you wear shorts underneath your dresses and skirts!
5. Tutoring Days:
If your child has lower than an 80% in one of our classes or has a failing test score, they will be scheduled for tutoring. I will email you ahead of time to schedule a day for your child to stay for tutoring.
Each week tutoring will focus on a different subject. You child may be asked to stay for some weeks, and not other. You will be notified which weeks they will need to stay.
6. Prizes:
Students are beginning to fill up their signature sheets and go to the prize box!!!! This makes me one very happy teacher. PLEASE HELP US BY SENDING IN AWESOME PRIZES! We want the students to WANT to go... this helps maintain wonderful behavior! :)

We STILL need non-fiction books!
We have some fantastic readers in 2nd grade! It makes me one very happy teacher. Your students are so excited about the books we have added to our classroom library to choose from! If you have any books at home (especially nonfiction and chapter books) that you are no longer using, please consider donating them to our classroom library! I would greatly appreciate any and all books that we can collect to have more for our students to choose from each month for their Reading Logs & Reflections project.
Home Visits
At FSAPS we do home visits. It is a wonderful opportunity for teachers and families to get to know one another. I enjoy home visits because it helps bridge the gap between home and school for your child. These are not mandatory, but if you are interested in having some of your child's teachers visit your home please continue to read...
How can you schedule a home visit?
Very simple. Please send an e-mail to our home visit coordinator, Mrs. Unal at junal@fultonscienceacademy.org and give us three available dates for your child's home visit program. We will get back to you and confirm a date. Depending on our teacher’s availability, at least two teachers will be together to visit our students and parents at their homes.
For any questions you have about this program, send an e-mail to junal@fultonscienceacademy.org. The best times to schedule a home visit are weekdays after 5:00 pm, and anytime during the weekends except Sunday mornings.

Curriculum Corner
Reading/Language Arts:
We are continuing with Unit 2 of our Reading Street curriculum this week. We will be reading an expository text called Scarcity. We will be discussing goods and services and how people work together to meet their needs. Our spelling words will be r-controlled vowels using er, ir, and ur! We will work on these all week long. In Language Arts, we will be reading and writing an autobiography. We will also be continuing our study of nouns: plural and singular nouns this week.
Ms. P's Math Class:
Ms. P's class will continue working on using bar models for addition and subtraction. Originally, our test was scheduled for TODAY. However, Ms. P decided that we need some more practice to ensure we fully understand and can use bar models properly before we take our test. We will take a quiz on Monday, October 19th to see where we are having difficulty. We will continue to practice and review, work on a study guide, and prepare for our test this week. Students will test on Friday, October 23rd.
Ms. Minor's Math Class:
Students will be wrapping up chapter 5 this week. Students will take the TEST on bar models this Tuesday, October 20th. This week's homework packet will serve as a study guide for the test on Tuesday. Make sure your child looks over it before Tuesday to get some extra practice! You can find a scanned copy of the homework packet in the math section on FSAconnect. We will begin Chapter 6 on Wednesday! This chapter will be on multiplication!
Science:
This week we will be wrapping up Ch.2 Technology and Tools. We will be reviewing together as a class, completing a study guide in class to use as a study resource, and testing on Thursday, October 22. Your students will bring home their study guide on Wednesday night to review at home for this test. This study guide can also be found on FSA Connect.
Social Studies:
We will continue to work on reading maps this week during our Social Studies lessons. This week we will focus on longitude and latitude lines, and we will create maps of our own using all of the terms we have been studying.
Character Education: This week we will continue to practice and work together on focusing attention and learning different and specific ways to be good listeners. A big part of this Character Education topic will be practicing listening and following directions. This is a great skill for us to work on for 2nd grade!
