Bookshelf by Robert William Service
I like to think that when I fall,
A rain-drop in Death’s shoreless sea,
This shelf of books along the wall,
Beside my bed, will mourn for me

So excited that the Planetarium has come to WEMP
The Vanderbilt Planetarium is coming to West End for the 5th graders on Monday, the 11th. This FREE out-of-this-world experience is being held in the old gym. If you are interested in hosting this kind of event for your grade, the contact info is: Grundstrom, Erika erika.grundstrom@Vanderbilt.Edu or https://my.vanderbilt.edu/planetarium/
Or let me know and I will be happy to make the arrangements for you. This is age appropriate for all grades. Topics that can be addressed in the planetarium include (click on the links for pictures of some of what the students would see in the dome):
- constellations
- star colors and other properties
- the mythology behind constellations (Greek, African, and Native American) -> this is a great way to incorporate cross-disciplinary studies!
- star chart/wheel usage
- the meaning of time periods (days, years)
- planetary positions
- the Sun-Earth-Moon system (in a crude sense as we cannot show eclipses nor successive phases – but we can help in understanding positioning)
- size and scale of the Solar System and the Galaxy
- coordinate systems (i.e. Right Ascension and Declination) and precession
- light pollution
- astrology (why it came to be and what we think of it now) and the ecliptic
LL School Delivery:
The LAST DAY we will deliver materials to schools is Friday, April 29. We will continue to accept returns through the end of the school year, but want to make sure all items are due before everyone is gone for the summer.
Please remind students who order from Limitless Libraries to check in the library to see if their items have arrived.
Students who can have their Nashville Public Library fines COMPLETELY WAIVED by filling out a simple form that I have in the library. Homeroom teachers, PLEASE encourage your students to do this.
