The McKelvey Messenger
News from our Schools - June, 2020
Hello from your New Principal!
Happy Summer to all of you! During this time of transition from one leadership team to the next, I wanted to check in, reach out, and let you know I am here for you. McKelvey’s “visible transition” with websites, apps, social media outlets, etc., will officially take place in July, but I have several items to share with you at this time. Please read on and feel free to reach out anytime. Thank you!

My Reflections on Recent Events
We are experiencing a time that continues to challenge us as people and as leaders. We are making history. As a school, community, and nation, our lives changed almost overnight from normalcy to isolation on March 23rd. For weeks we battled with emergency, remote learning for our children and heard little more than cases, curves, and Covid-19 from our news outlets. Parents and teachers worked together and made the most of a tough situation. And we learned. How to run a class meeting on Zoom. How to present a live lesson to 20 students in 2 x 3 tiles and on mute. How to celebrate amazing achievements with yard signs, video messages, and drive-through events. How to hold a community together when the world was falling apart.
And when we’d almost caught our breaths, and questions had shifted to how the pandemic might impact summer plans, or what this will mean for the return to school in the fall, our lives changed once again. Almost overnight, from anxiety to turmoil, on May 25th. And I found myself learning again... As a white ally and advocate for all people, I am learning more about the pain and fear of my brothers and sisters of color. I am listening more, reading more, and asking more questions. My greatest desire for our community and our world is that we will all learn more and work together to transform anger, division, and pain into hope, unity, and change. Our current times present a unique opportunity to reflect again about what it means to prepare all children for a world that is rapidly changing.
I am moved. I am motivated. I am ready to do great work for the students, families, and staff of McKelvey. I look forward to your partnership in the months and years to come!

Planning for the 2020-2021 School Year
All About Kindergarten
- Please spread the word to neighbors and friends to register their children if they haven't yet done so. Accurate enrollment is critical to a strong start in August!
- Plans are underway to make the transition into Kindergarten a smooth, positive, and meaningful experience for students and parents alike. Please look for an email and questionnaire just for you coming next week.
Summer Updates
McKelvey is fully staffed for the 2020-2021 school year! Mr. Moore, Dr. Goodwin, and myself are thrilled to be leading such a talented group!
You won’t see our traditional school supply lists in area stores this year. With goals to reduce costs to parents, limit the need to bring things in and out of the building, and avoid the sharing of supplies, the district is taking school supply lists into consideration in the return to school planning. More information will be available in July.
All buildings remain closed to the public through the month of June and until further notice.
Construction continues at the Primary building and we eagerly await its grand opening in August.
