Families in Spain

Belief/ View on Family
- Family is the most important thing in Spain.
Family Structure
- Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins commonly maintain close relations with the nuclear family.
- It is uncommon for young couples to live with one of the parents, but the parents usually live nearby to help with child care.
- The average family has two children.
Child/ Parent Relationship
- Children, especially boys are expected to help with housework, and usually live with their parents until they finish school, get a job, or sometimes even marriage.
- When parents get older, most of them live on pensions and do not need financial support of their children.
- If the parents are unable to care for themselves, their children will wither care for them or take them to live in a home for the elderly.
Gender Roles
- Most women are employed, but women still earn less than men for equivalent work.
- The father was the head of the home, but that is changing.
- Young couples share responsibility for housework and raising their children.
Interesting Fact
- Around 60 percent of Spanish college students are women.
