Classroom News
Sight Words-We will have a new list of sight words coming home on Monday. The words are :have, little, be, then, down . We will test on FRIDAY. Please review last weeks words. Many students had problems with the word there and out. We have students writing it as "owt" and "theer" The words we tested this Friday were : have, little, be, then, down.
Word Their Way- please do not have your child glue word or picture items to their sorting mats until Thursday. They need to be moving the pieces around. Students are bring sorts back with pictures glued to them on Tuesday. This makes us sad. They are practicing moving the pictures or words over and over again. They do need to have a sort set for home. They will have another one for school. On test day the spelling teacher will provide a 3rd sort set. We will be retest students to see how they have grown and what they have mastered over the last 14 weeks.
Reading
We are working on reading students have been placed in small reading groups. They are working on various skill-rhyming, initial sounds, final sounds, syllable counts, adjectives and sight words. Each reading group is different and supports what the students are learning in class.
We are starting a change on our reading this 9 weeks. We are going to wrap multi-cultural stories about different holidays and traditions with our socials studies themes. Students will be reviewing noun, verbs and learning about adjectives. We have just completed our monthly I-station testing. We are seeing growth on many levels.
Social Studies- We will be working on the family traditions and holiday. We will be discussing different Holiday and Traditions around the world. We will explore how they are different and how they are the same.
Math- We are going to test on skip counting and knowing the 100's charts. We have been working on this the last few weeks. Now we will be moving into place value, expanded notation of a number and making models of the numbers using base ten blocks. For example 25 is a group of 2 tens and 5 ones. Student will be given tools to explore the true meaning of the numbers on the 120's chart. You can make counting sticks at home with pinto beans and popsicle sticks. Glue in place 10 beans on the sticks and 1's are individual beans.
Science - We will be learning about how force and movement. Student will be working with different materials to see how a marble will roll on these different materials. We will be expanding our vocabulary with words like friction, forward, backwards, zig-zag, and loopy.
Cold and Flu season is HERE!
Your child’s health is of great importance. It is that time of year when colds, flu and viruses run wild in schools, churches, and other public places. We will take every precaution to have a healthy and safe environment. Please consider getting a flu shot for yourself and your child. Having the flu is not any fun and can be life threatening for young children.
We would like you to consider keeping your child home if they have fever, diarrhea and vomiting. It is requested that students be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. Please don't give your child a fever reducer and send them to school. Our bodies create a fever to fight viruses and to give us a warning that we are sick. When you send a child to school sick you will be impacting 20 plus families in addition to the teachers and their families. Teachers don't like missing days of school due to illness.
If your child becomes ill while at school, we will take them to the school nurse. The nurse will evaluate your child and contact you to let you know if you need to pick your child up. Please keep in mind the only person on campus that can give any medication is our school nurse.
Weather and Clothing
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately. If you send sweaters or jackets, please make sure you have written your child’s name on the tag or in the article of clothing. We are still planning on going outside unless it is raining or snowing.
