Wayne Thiebaud

Wayne Thiebaud was born in Mesa Arizona in 1920. He was always an artistic kid and began working in art related jobs when he was only 18! He painted signs, was an illustrator and a cartoonist; he even was an apprentice for Disney Studios. He joined the Air Force in 1942 and painted murals during his service. He went to several art schools between 1949 and 1953. Thiebaud had his first solo art show at the Crocker Gallery, he continues to make work today and teaches!

The fifth grade students studied the life and art of Wayne Thiebaud focusing on discussing his relationship with pop art. The students used clay to sculpt their own cupcake containers, a base, a lid and embellishments. They had to show their knowledge of clay to make attachments and to build as well as think about the sculpture from all sides.
