The ABC's of Kindergarten
Sight Words
What are sight words for kindergarten?
Kindergarten sight words are words that a child learns to recognize in their whole form, rather than sounding them out. These words usually appear frequently in texts or are difficult to decode.

Big Kid Book Club
The Deer Valley Unified School District invites your child to join the Big Kid Book Club! Let us help your child cultivate a love for reading – and get ready for kindergarten.
We will periodically send your child a free book in the mail along with helpful advice for parents of 3-5 year olds.
You do not need to live within the Deer Valley Unified School District to participate. All children between the ages of 3-5, who are not yet attending kindergarten, are eligible to join the Big Kid Book Club.

Immunization Requirements
The State of Arizona has revised the immunization requirements for preschool, kindergarten and first grade children entering school for childcare. In addition to Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus (DPT) and Polio (OPV), Varicella (Chicken Pox) immunizations, youngsters need to complete a second dose of the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine and receive at least the first dose in a series of three for Hepatitis B prior to starting school. Children entering Preschool will need Hepatitis A immunizations (there are two needed) and 3-4 Hib vaccines. Children turning 11 years old, regardless of grade, will need to have a Tdap and Meningitis Vaccine.
For information on free immunization clinics, please visit maricopa.gov/1809/Locations or call the Maricopa County Department of Public Health at 602-506-6900.
Message from the Director of Food & Nutrition
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Thank you for the opportunity to serve your student(s) balanced and nutritious meals. Unfortunately, the U.S.D.A., whom administers the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, has announced that meals will return to pre-Covid pricing next fall. Meals will no longer be free for all students beginning with the 22/23 academic year.
Deer Valley Unified School District understands that our students and families still face many, many economic challenges. We highly encourage parents/guardians to complete a Free and Reduced Meal Application for their household this summer. Please note that the USDA has not yet released the applications for the 2022/23 academic year. All families that have updated email contacts in PowerSchools will receive notification from DVUSD in July, as soon as the applications are released.
We know your time is valuable. Please note that the few minutes required to complete a meal application can also offer additional opportunities to support and assist your family. Students eligible for free/reduced meals can also qualify for additional benefits – It’s More Than a Meal Application!
Please contact lisa.romberg@dvusd.org with any questions or concerns.
Wishing you and your students a safe and fun summer.
Sincerely,
Joan Chiarello
