Rock Your Socks!

Bethel Springs Elementary School will be Rocking Our Socks to bring awareness about Down Syndrome.

Mismatched socks can be purchased for $1/pair using the order form linked below:

Orders must be submitted by Monday, March 18th and proceeds benefit the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware.

"Together we will create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome in our schools, community and around the world. 3/21, World Down Syndrome Day, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which leads to Down Syndrome."

Garnet Valley School District will be tagging all of our pictures this year with the hashtag #GVRocksSocks. Feel free to share your pictures on Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag.

For more information about World Down Syndrome Awareness Day and Rock Your Socks, you can check out the website for the Delaware Down Syndrome Association, the organization that provides our socks!

Additional Security Measures in GV Elementary Schools

Dear School Community,

Garnet Valley School District is pleased to announce that we will begin using the Raptor Visitor Management System in all of our schools to strengthen our program of campus safety for students and faculty. Although Raptor is already used at the secondary level, all elementary schools will begin implementation after spring break. Part of keeping students and faculty safe is knowing who is in our buildings at all times, and the Raptor system will allow us to do that. The Raptor system will better allow us to screen visitors, contractors, and volunteers in our schools and provide us with a safer environment for our students and staff.

Upon entering a district building, visitors will be asked to present an ID such as a Driver’s License, which can either be scanned or manually entered into the system. If a parent or guardian for any reason does not have a US government-issued ID, the school staff member can use any form of identification and manually enter the person’s name into the Raptor system. The Raptor system will check to ensure that registered sexual offenders are not entering our school campuses without our knowledge. The Raptor system checks the visitor's name and date of birth for comparison with a national database of registered sex offenders. The registered sex offender database is the only official database checked by the Raptor system. No other data from the ID is gathered or recorded and the information is not shared with any outside agency. Once entry is approved, Raptor will issue a badge that identifies the visitor, the date, and the purpose of his/her visit. A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools simply to drop off an item in the office or pick up paperwork.

The safety of our students is our highest priority and the Raptor visitor management system allows us to quickly identify those that may present a danger to our students. Thank you in advance for your understanding and your support in enhancing the school safety protocols in our district. Especially at the elementary level, our principals will continue to communicate with parents as we implement the system after spring break.

Safe Touch Lessons March 25-27

Teachers from Delaware County Women Against Rape will join us on March 25-27 to engage each of our classes in learning important information about personal safety. We have been fortunate to host these lessons in our K-5 classes for over 20 years in Garnet Valley. The lessons are well-prepared and are developmentally appropriate. Discover Greece!

This year our Art and Literature Fling will focus on Greece! Each week in our announcements we will include a fact about this fascinating culture that stretches back thousands of years and has had such incredible influence on the world. PLEASE SHARE THE WEEKLY FACT WITH THE KIDS! In May, around the time of our Art and Literature Fling, there will be an electronic quiz on the weekly facts sent home for families to complete. All families achieving a perfect score will have their names put in a prize basket raffle to be drawn at the conclusion of the Art and Literature Fling on Wednesday, May 28th (you'll have to be present to win)!

This Week's Fact About Greece: In Greece, people celebrate the “name day” of the saint that bears their name rather than their own birthday.

For members of the Greek Orthodox faith, name days are a much-anticipated event each year, greatly overshadowing birthdays. Most children born into Greek Orthodox families will be given a name that coincides with the name of a Greek Orthodox officially recognized saint. The name day is celebrated on the saint's day and is a cause for birthday-like celebrations including sweets, gifts, and parties.
