Walnut Back-to-School Information

August 13, 2021

School Starts at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18th

We are looking forward to welcoming our Wildcats to school on Wednesday, August 18th. School starts at 8:15 a.m. each day, and gates open at 7:45 a.m. I am asking that each student arrives wearing a mask. They will be able to remove the masks later in the day for recess, outdoor PE, and lunchtime. Students and staff will also need to self-screen before coming to school each day and stay home if they have viral symptoms and/or a fever of 99.5 degrees or higher.

TK and Kindergarten students are dismissed every day at 1:20 p.m. Grades 1-5 dismiss at 2:40 p.m. every day EXCEPT Wednesday, when we have early-release at 1:30 p.m. Please note that grades 1-5 will be dismissed at 1:30 on the first day of school, since it is a Wednesday.

Families are invited to come to Walnut on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 17th, from 3-4 to find out class/teacher assignments. PTA will be present with information for families and treats for the kids.

Please read the information below carefully and feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. The Walnut staff is hard at work preparing for an amazing school year that is safe and enriching for all! #wildcatsbettertogether

Check out our website, conejousd.org/walnut for more information as well, including links to CVUSD safety guidelines and other resources. We will be following all safety protocols, including frequent handwashing, proper ventilation, assigned seating in classrooms and lunch tables, and maximizing space whenever possible.

Important Computer News

CVUSD now has a 1:1 Computer Initiative that will make sure every student has a digital device. At the beginning of the year, students in grades TK-2 will have a device accessible in the classroom. They may bring the laptops home later in the year as needed. For now, if your TK-2nd grade child has a district device at home, they may keep it at home. We will let you know when they should return it to school.

Students in grades 3-5 all need to have a device to take to and from school every day. Part of students' homework will be to take their device home and charge it for the next day. In light of this new policy, Walnut's 3rd - 5th Grade Students who have a CVUSD laptop/Chromebook at home should bring it to school, with the charging cable, on the first day of school. Our computer site technician will be evaluating the devices before they are reissued. Students who do not currently have a CVUSD digital device will be issued one. Teachers will send home a parent permission form with all 3rd-5th grade students. Our goal is that each 3rd-5th grade student will have a CVUSD device to begin bringing back and forth to school by August 23rd.

Walnut Elementary School

Walnut is a neighborhood school with a BIG heart, where every student is valued and encouraged to develop a lifelong love of learning. We believe in developing the whole child, so we invest in the visual and performing arts, technology, and physical fitness in addition to traditional academics. We were recently one of five schools in Ventura County named as a California Honor Roll School. We are committed to our mission statement, Academic Excellence for All in a Safe, Enriching Environment. Walnut has an active PTA, School Site Council, and English Language Advisory Council. Each of these groups of parents and community members would LOVE to have YOU join them in making sure Walnut provides the best possible learning environment for students and families.
