EAGAN HIGH SCHOOL NOMINATES TWO FOR MSHSL ExCEL AWARD
December 12, 2022: Eagan High School has nominated Ava Bertsch and Mason Hoekenga for the ExCEL
(Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership) Award.
Sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League, ExCEL is a unique recognition
program designed exclusively for Minnesota High School juniors. Students who are active in
fine arts and/or athletic activities, showing leadership qualities, and who are model citizens in
their community are eligible for the award.
Ava Bertsch is a member of the Volleyball Team. She is a three-year letter winner who
has earned All- Conference and serves her teammates as a Captain. She has also lettered as
a track athlete. Ava has been a Link Crew leader helping to welcome our 9th graders into the
High School. Ava has spent time serving others though her church and sports that she loves.
Here is what one of her teachers says about Ava. “Ava carries herself with a certain integrity
and grace that earns her the utmost respect from her peers and our entire faculty. She is
humble beyond belief and puts the needs of classmates and teammates before herself each
and every day.” Ava is the daughter of Amber and Jeremy Bertsch.
Mason Hoekenga has been involved in a number of activities at Eagan High School.
Mason is a three-year participant in Cross Country and has lettered two years. He has been
selected as team Captain for his senior year. Mason plays baseball at Eagan and earned the
Wildcat Service Award. Mason is a leader on our Speech Team at Eagan. He has earned
letters all years of participation, is a category Captain, has qualified for the National Individual
Events Tournament of Champions and earned the Reed Award which represents leaders who
put the team before themselves. Mason has also served his school as a member of Link Crew
and Student Government and served the community through coaching and in his church. He
also on his own, organized and directed a 5K to support the mission of Feed My Starving
Children organization. Called the Fight For Food 5K. His speech coach says this about Mason,
“I am most impressed with how humble he is and I believe these characteristics make him genuinely
well-liked by his peers. At Saturday speech meets, I observe Mason talking to the younger kids,
making sure they know where to go and checking in on their progress. He is a respected favorite
within the team.” Mason is the son of Janel and Jonathan Hoekenga.

Students Entering Eagan HS During the School Day
Maintaining security in our school during the school day is important. We want to be sure that only Eagan HS students, or students enrolled in our Career Development courses from District 196 schools, or those EHS students who travel from SES to EHS for one or two courses, are entering our building during the school day.
After 7:40 AM all students who enter the building travel in through the secure entry booths. Students will be expected to show their current student id card (which is issued free to all students each school year) at the entry booth station.
Any student who does not have the id card should stop in Attendance to request a replacement.
