FHSD Practical Arts Update
August 2013
Welcome Back!
This is my first (of what I hope to be several) newsletters this year. I have a few goals for the newsletter. First, this website/app is really neat and easy to use. It allows you to create flyer type documents which could be cool to use for a presentation option for your students. Second, there is always a lot of information floating around, and this allows me to share that information with you in a timely way. Third, I've been wanting to do a newsletter for a while, but I never made time!
Some tidbits in the newsletter will be for everyone, but since I work with four different departments, you may have to skim and skip sometimes. So sit back and enjoy!
Curriculum Cycle 2.0
The main differences to the cycle are each course has a place in the cycle each year, what used to be a one year writing year, has evolved into a six-step cycle for each course. Our hopes are that we will be able to make time for long-term planning and focused discussions about resources, implementation, and monitoring.
District PD Days
The remaining PD half days are 8/30, 9/20, 11/1, 1/3, and 2/14 from 8am to noon. The PD day on August 30 will be to receive training in Mastery Connect. Your building principal should be telling you more about this day (such as location and anything you need to bring). The remaining days are district-planned days.
Elementary PE teachers will meet with me as we prepare for Common Core and the transition into 21st century learning and the relation to units of study. We will meet at Francis Howell Central in room 119, starting promptly at 8am. Please bring your laptop and powercord.
Secondary Practical Arts/PE teachers will be going through Common Core training with the district Content Area Literacy Leaders (CALs). Each area in Practical Arts/PE will have a CAL that knows the content in that area and has been trained in leteracy strategies to help integrate Common Core standards in an authentic and meaningful way. Teachers will meet at Francis Howell Central in their departmental groups to review, learn, and collaborate. Information will be sent out soon with specific locations for each group.
Have a Great Year!
