Message from the Office!
Dear Parents,
In light of future demographic changes in our school, we would like you to be a part of our vision for the 2019-2020 school year.
First, rest assured that your administrative team, as well as staff, believe in an inclusive school. Having said that, it is our desire to make OLPH one unified school that continues to promote respect for all.
Secondly, the addition of an English program will bring many advantages to our school. This can be reflected in the addition of our CTF laboratories as well as the numerous options and programs which will now be accessible for our students.
Please rest assured that we will keep you informed as to any new developments in regards to reconfiguration. In the meantime, rest assured that we will leave nothing to chance and that we will be as prepared as possible for the upcoming changes.
We ask that you remain positive in light of all challenges that may occur.

Accountability Pillar Survey
As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success.
The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators. Data on these indicators consists of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of education quality, student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates, and provincial assessments of student learning.
From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey.
- In January, parents of students in grade 7 will receive a survey from Alberta Education.
- In February, students in grade 7 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school.
All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with your school.
In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Dene, Cree, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu.
Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.
Reminder ~ Grade 8 Farewell ~ Student Pictures
In preparation for the Grade 8 Farewell which will be held on Friday, June 14th at OLPH Church from 6-9:30 pm, we are requesting ONE “baby” photo (0-2 years of age) and ONE current photo of each grade 8 student to be used in the powerpoint presentation during the evening. (After Farewell, each student will be forwarded the presentation for their memories.)
In addition, if you have any photos of the students from their elementary day, please email those to me as well.
These photos may be brought to the school in paper format (whereupon they will be scanned and returned), or they may be sent in digital format to deniseg@eics.ab.ca. If they are attached to a photo album, please do not remove them from the page as I can scan and crop them.
Please send the two photos to school by Jan. 18th at the latest.
Thank you so much in advance for your cooperation, and I wish everyone has a safe, blessed and Merry Christmas with their family and friends.
Blessings,
Mme Denise Gagnon

What is Emotional Availability?
Dear Parents,
What is emotional availability? Why is it important?
Emotional availability is "being with" a child through difficult experiences. One of our jobs as caregivers is teaching emotional intelligence by "being with" our children through all their emotions (joy, sadness, pain, frustration, curiosity, shame etc). "Being with" children helps them understand, trust and move on with their feelings and having someone with them helps them feel less overwhelmed and less insecure. "Being with" is an important step to emotional self-regulation because we need to co-regulate with children for them to understand and feel confident to do it on their own. But sometimes our children express feelings that makes us feel uncomfortable, frustrated etc. This discomfort with emotions may be explained by a term called "Shark Music".
Please take a moment to watch this video.
With "Shark Music", we rarely know it is playing but it is our past experiences that are telling us to be afraid or uncomfortable with a feeling or a need that is actually safe. When adults are uncomfortable with a feeling or need, children learn to adapt by hiding a feeling, experience or a need. Most adults experience shark music with a least one feeling, so you are not alone. Simple awareness around when it a triggered feeling is important and is the first and important step. Shark Music doesn't define our ability to parent and sometimes naming it "that's my shark music" can stop our reactions and then mindfully redirect our energy to "being with" our children and their experiences.
Any question or need some clarification, please feel free to contact Mme Simone Moniz at either school or directly at simone.moniz@eics.ab.ca

Nut-Aware Environment!
École OLPH Catholic School is a nut-aware environment.
This school policy is in place to provide a safe environment for our children and staff who have life-threatening allergies to nuts and nut products.
We ask parents to monitor this closely with your children as you prepare snacks and lunches to be brought to school.
When bringing classroom treats, please call the teacher to inquire about other food allergies which may cause a severe anaphylactic reaction.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact M. Morin at alyrem@eics.ab.ca or M. St. Jean at marcs@eics.ab.ca.

FundScrip Fundraising
Dear Parents,
OLPH School Council has been using FundScrip for the last 5 years as one of the schools main fundraisers.
FundScrip, is a fundraising program that lets you raise funds simply by purchasing gift cards for your everyday shopping (i.e. groceries, gas, gifts and household items). When you purchase a $100 grocery gift card, you receive the $100 card, but in addition, a percentage is donated to our fundraising campaign. It’s like getting free money, where the only catch is you have to change your method of payment to using gift cards!
