Principal's Message
Dear Families,
These last two weeks have been extremely busy, as our students continue to learn how to regulate their emotions, as outlined in our Zones of Regulation curriculum. Additionally, teachers have begun implementing the Harmony curriculum, as part of our social-emotional learning. Our teachers have been meeting with our math and ELA coaches in reviewing our students' baseline data, tiered strategies to support students, and enrichment lessons. We are looking forward to our upcoming parent/teacher conferences, which will be held on November 2, 9, and 16th. Please feel free to stop by the front office to talk with us as well. We are here to support our students, families, and staff.
This week's newsletter includes information for a clothing drive, to support a student from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, as part of her Eagle Project. We have other opportunities for partnership with some Lincoln-Sudbury students as they would like to become a reading buddy for your child, at our local town library. Additionally, we are providing you with some winter recess guidelines as we begin to prepare for the upcoming winter season.
Sincerely,
Nadine Ekstrom, Ph.D.
Interim Principal
This Week's HAWK STARS!
Each day, students are granted the opportunity to receive Hawk Sightings, which are acknowledgments that they have gone above and beyond in supporting our school rules. Their name goes into a grade level jar, and one person is selected from each grade level to represent the weekly HAWK STAR. We are very proud of these students.
At this week's ALL School meeting, we heard from a Lincoln-Sudbury student, Savannah, who was the first female from Sudbury to work on an Eagle project. We also introduced our new Haynes Safety Patrol participants from Mr. Clemons' class. Ms. Lamoureaux announced Grade 4 won the food pantry contribution contest and will determine the theme for the next food drive!
Safety Patrol at Haynes!
When you visit Haynes throughout the school year, you are likely to see fifth grade Safety Patrol monitors at work! Safety Patrol is made up of fifth grade volunteers who have assumed leadership roles to help strengthen our school. Some jobs include assisting with morning arrival, guiding students during dismissal time, setting up and putting away recess games and equipment, raising and lowering the flag, and assisting in the library and health office. All fifth graders are expert role models in the Haynes community and Safety Patrol is another opportunity to practice leadership skills in our community. Every position is important and extremely helpful. We truly appreciate our Safety Patrol volunteers’ generosity and commitment! Thank you to Mr. Clemons’ class volunteers who are our Safety Patrol monitors until mid-January. Volunteers from Mrs. Duckett and Ms. Haney’s classes will become Safety Monitors later in the year. Thank you fifth graders!
Haynes Winter Recess Guidelines
Students are not permitted to be outside for recess if the temperature/wind chill is below 20 degrees or if the grounds are deemed unsafe by the Principal/Assistant Principal or School Nurse. Individual students will not be kept in at parent request.
As with inclement weather, the office will announce any shift to indoor recess due to cold temperatures or unsafe conditions as early as possible. Any changes will be shared over PA announcement. Grade levels may decide to hold any secondary recesses indoors at their discretion.
WINTER RECESS EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS:
You must wear what you wore to school out to recess. This includes hats, gloves and coats.
You must wear boots to walk in the snow. Otherwise, you must stay on cleared hardtop/rubber surface.
You must wear snow pants to sit/kneel in snow.
You may pick up snow to touch or build with. Remember that whatever you build during one recess will probably not be there for the next.
You may not throw snow or ice at any time.
You must remain off the ice at all times.
Recess teachers may decide that some parts of the playground or field are unsafe, and you may be told to avoid those areas on some days.
All our normal recess expectations remain the same in the snow.
A Note From the Haynes Heath Office
Flu, COVID, Strep OH MY!
As the winter starts to creep in, so do many common illnesses. We have COVID specific guidelines from DESE requiring an at-home antigen COVID test for symptoms. For generalized illness, please keep sick kids home. Fevers, vomiting, and diarrhea require students to stay home until fever/vomiting/diarrhea free for 24 hours without using medication. For strep and conjunctivitis, students must be on antibiotics for at least 24 hours before returning. You can always call or email Nurse Jackman with any questions or concerns corinne_Jackman@sudbury.k12.ma.us

Disability Reframed
Instagram celebrity Ashley Harris Whaley from @Disablity Reframed talked about "Unlearning Ableism: Action Allyship, & How to Talk to Children about Disability" on October 17th via Zoom.
