The Carleton Chronicle
A weekly update from Carleton Middle School
November 15, 2019
Did you know?
Did you know?
-There are 698 students at Carleton Middle School. This includes 255 sixth graders, 209 seventh graders, and 234 eighth graders.
- All 8th grade students are currently going through the educational development plan (EDP) process with their counselor. This helps them plan for the future (high school) and begin to think about what they'd like to do for a living (besides becoming a YouTuber).
- We have a Peer to Peer program that promotes acceptance and intermingles our special education students with general education.
- We have two social workers, a school psychologist, two counselors, two speech pathologists, one teacher consultant, three office staff, two custodians, four cafeteria supervisors (1 at breakfast), and five kitchen staff.
- Ms. Scheele's fourth hour class is the latest winner of the Attendance Cup Challenge (highest percentage of present students and fewest number of tardies).
- Our 8th grade volleyball team went undefeated this year. (This was the second year in a row as they went undefeated as 7th graders too).
- The PSAT will be given to all 8th grade students this year THE DAY WE COME BACK FROM SPRING BREAK. More information will be available at Parent-Teacher Conferences.
- Report cards will come home next week.
- We offer lunch support with two different teachers. Both Ms. Ciak and Ms. Erdelean offer a quiet place to work and an opportunity to get caught up on missing assignments, study for a test, or complete other school projects.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Please consider attending Parent-Teacher Conferences on Monday, November 25th or Tuesday, November 26th. On Monday, we'll be here from 5-8 PM and Tuesday we'll be here from 12:30-3 PM and again from 5-8 PM. This is a great opportunity to speak with your child's teachers about their progress, successes, struggles, and behavior. Also, the BOOK FAIR (see below) will be here and you can do some holiday shopping for your child. (They have more than just books).
Our counselors, administrators, and other support staff will be here as well to answer any questions you may have. We hope you will take some time to visit us next week. If you have never attended a middle school conference, I would encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and visit us. Contrary to elementary conferences, there are no "scheduled" times to meet with teachers but rather a first come, first served system. Arrive when you can and visit with your son or daughter's teachers at any point throughout the scheduled times. We will have a "quick-lookup" available for the most current grades in the 2nd quarter.

Outstanding Teacher of the Year (from Mr. Bernia)
Dear Teachers, Administrators, Support Staff, Parents and Students,
This annual letter, a call to recognize the best teachers our district has to offer, is one of the highest privileges serving as your Chief Academic Officer offers to me. With that in mind, I write to you today as we prepare once again to celebrate our profession. Our district presents Outstanding Teachers-of-the-Year awards annually to honor teachers who have achieved the highest standards of excellence in our profession. These awards are created out of a conviction that quality public education is essential to our community and that encouraging excellence in education is the shared responsibility of all who reap its benefits. Warren Consolidated Schools (WCS) has served our community well for decades. It is critical that each year, we step back and honor the hardworking teachers who serve our students each day.
Below is the link to access the nomination survey for the 2019-2020 Warren Consolidated Schools’ Outstanding Teachers-of-the-Year. Nominations may be submitted by teachers, administrators, support staff, parents or students. Teachers may not nominate themselves. Nominations should be submitted by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2019.

A District committee will select one winner at each level: elementary (grades PreK-5), middle (grades 6-8), and high (grades 9-12) school. Each WCS District nominee will be invited to attend a reception in their honor where they will be recognized along with the public announcement of the three winners at a Board of Education meeting in the spring. The three outstanding Teachers of the Year will represent Warren Consolidated Schools in the annual Macomb County Teacher-of-the Year Program. A celebration to honor the nominees will be held at the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD) in the spring. As you may know, in the past two years, a teacher from our district has been selected as a Macomb County Outstanding Teacher of the Year!
