Garden Education with Ms. Young

Hello to the Hooker Oak Family of students, parents, and staff! My name is Sharman Young (Ms. Young) and I’m a very happy Garden Resource Teacher who has found a wonderful place to “be” in the Hooker Oak Garden. After some organizational clean-up work, I’ve started teaching garden lessons and couldn’t be happier with the lovely children I’m meeting. And they love to work! Once a week I work with each class in the school and we’ve already started our Garden Club which meets during recesses.

We’re composting in the garden in various ways including worm compost which I call “the heart of the garden” because so much science lives there; food chains, decomposition, many mysteries, and such good nutrition for our plants. We’re moving rocks, watering very dry soil, pulling stubborn weeds, sorting seeds, and suddenly, watching leaves fall, and raking them!

It feels so good to be back working in a school again after the pandemic hiatus. I retired as a full-time Spanish Immersion Teacher about ten years ago ( I’ve subbed off and on since then). During that sixteen-year career, I was always the Garden Resource Teacher and learned much about school gardens. Before teaching, I was a gardener for twelve years, eight years of which I worked for George Lucas at Skywalker Ranch. That was an amazing job and I have many star-studded tales to tell (from a very “grounded” viewpoint, of course!)

I look forward to meeting the Hooker Oak parents and hopefully some of you may have some garden talents that can be shared. We’ll have some work days coming up. I’m grateful for the cooler weather, and for this opportunity to work with all of you!

Sprouty Store Wishlist

The Sprouty Store was a huge success last year, and we need donations for the new school year! The Sprouty store is a monthly student store that is available for 1st-5th grade students. Throughout the school year students earn Sproutys, Hooker Oak's school money, and they can spend them at the store. The Sprouty Store is able to happen from parent donations. You can check out our Amazon wish list, which gets directly sent to Hooker Oak, or if you spot something you think students will enjoy you can drop it off at the office. We appreciate all donations to the Sprouty Store!

Field Trip T-Shirt Sponsors

Every year we provide each student with a field trip t-shirt to wear when they are out in the community. Hooker Oak students will be wearing these t-shirts in the community and during spirit days where your business logo will be proudly displayed! Additionally, any Hooker Oak family who wishes to donate will have their name printed on the t-shirts as well.

We have three ways to sponsor our student t-shirts:

-$250 donation includes business name and logo

-$100 donation includes business name

-$100 donation includes family name

*Checks can be made payable to Hooker Oak PTO or paid electronically via PayPal to hookeroakpto@gmail.com*

Logos can be submitted to hookeroakpto@gmail.com
