History of the compass
The magnetic compass was first made by the Chinese in China during the Qin dynasty. The compass were made of lodestone which is an iron mineral.
North
Your compass will point to the north when you are living in the northern hemisphere. It is because Earth has a magnetic field. The Earth has two poles, the north and the south pole. If you're someone that lives in the north, your compass will point to the north because you are closer to the north pole.
South
Your compass will point to the south because it is closer to the south pole.It is because the compass is magnetic and will point to the closest pole. The Earth has a magnetic field and the arrow will point the the closest pole.
How to use a compass
Now you know about the North and the South poles. This is how you use a compass. You hold the compass. You hold it flat on your hand. Then move around a little.Your compass will point to northeast,northwest,southeast,or southwest. Go straight and you will go north.If you turn right you will go northwest. That is how you use a compass.
