KTS Newsletter
Term 4, Week 8, Tuesday 7 December 2021
We are nearly there… As we come to the end of another year it is a time to say thank you to our school community. We would have normally acknowledged everyone at International Night but that was one event we had to put off. As a staff we would like to sincerely thank you, our parent community, for everything you have done to support us this year; the notes of appreciation, the fundraising support, coming on camps and trips - we couldn’t do it without you.
For those families who leave our school we wish you and your children well as they move into a new learning environment. We have thoroughly enjoyed having you as part of our Kohia whanau.
For those who are back next year, have a well deserved break and lovely summer. We look forward to seeing you back at school Thursday 3rd February. School stationery information can be found on the school website. We have reduced the costs as books and materials that have not been used this year have been passed onto your child’s 2022 teacher.
Congratulations to TE KANAWA who have won this year’s house competition. Whilst we could not go to the movies, we have given students a rather lovely icy treat today, and tomorrow.
Congratulations also to our 2022 head students, Sara and Cody, who will be ably supported by Kyra and Freeman (pictured above). You will hear more about them next year.
COVID update
We are delighted that all the students who were close contacts of our positive case have all tested negative (twice) and are now able to return to school. Whilst not an ideal way to end the year, it was good to test our processes and systems in case we have another positive case in the school next year. Again, thank you for your kind wishes and care over this tricky time. The family involved are doing well.
– Alison

Class placements
This afternoon your children would have found out what class they will be in for 2022. As you receive this, you can check HERO to find that information out. Your child’s 2022 class teacher will also be sending you an email with an introductory slide show as we have not been able to do our normal new class visit.
There is a great deal of effort that goes into class placements, and the students themselves have given their current teacher the names of 3 children they would like to be with; teachers have ensured your child is with at least one of their preferred buddies. As there is a lot of juggling to ensure gender balance, ethnicity, learning abilities, proficiency in English, we do not make changes to class lists.
We are delighted to confirm our teaching team for 2022 is as follows:
Prizegiving 2021
Awards were presented to the following students:
The Year 8 prize winners will be celebrated in a special update tomorrow.
Catherine has diligently taken a photo of each recipient. If you would like to receive this photo, please email your child’s classroom teacher who will be able to send it through to you.
The following Sports Trophies were also awarded. If your child was not there to receive their award, it can be collected from the office on Wednesday or Thursday.
Basketball/Waterpolo/Flippaball
Netball
Jump Jam
Waterslide fun
The children have had a fantastic time today on the waterslide. Here are some pictures and a piece of writing from Room 7:
I raced to the waterslide as fast as a cheetah and had my turn. It was amazing!
I was so excited and nervous all at the same time but when I went down the slide and made a huge splash I wasn’t nervous anymore. I went again and again and again and again! It was so much fun I wanted to stay but then it was time to go back to class and get changed. It was the best school day ever in my whole entire life and for a century!

Library Book Returns
We are still waiting on about 30 more books to come back. These books have now been out for 2 terms and we are trying to finalise the library records. Please bring these back this year. I have made it as easy as possible with the return box on the front doorstep, you do not even have to come inside. We do charge for lost or unreturned books.
The library is now closed for end-of-year jobs.
Visit Epsom Library or go to https://www.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz/Pages/school-holidays.aspx for some great summer holiday events.

Sports Support role 2022
I would like to acknowledge Phoebe Wen who has done an awesome job supporting Rachel Ogilvy in the sports role over 2021. She has been so inspired she is heading off to complete her postgraduate teaching diploma next year. SO - we need some new. Is this you?
We are seeking someone to work 6 hours a week in 2022 from 11.30am to 2.30pm two days a week (preferably), but this is negotiable. The job description is attached HERE. Please contact Alison if you are interested, or email (alison@kts.school.nz) outlining your suitability.
Summer Reading Challenge!
The 2021–22 Summer Reading Challenge has just launched and will run until Friday, January 21.
Children aged 5 and up are welcome to join and it's completely free. They can choose from 2 teams in their age group, named after creatures from the rocky shore.
This year, there are six ways to win prizes. Only one of them is about reading a large number of books. Children can also win prizes by sending us pictures of their favourite book or summer reading spot to go in the draw to win packs of exciting new books!
We’re also giving away book tokens as spot prizes every day of the competition. All children who have logged at least one book go in the draw for these.
