Old Adobe Educator Weekly Round-Up

September 27 - October 1, 2021

Big picture

Greetings OAUSD Educators,

As we continue in this second month of school I am enjoying visiting the gardens and school grounds, sitting at lunch with students or hanging out with them at recess, connecting in the educator meet-ups and immersing myself in classroom walkthroughs. As I observe instruction, I have witnessed teachers practice routines and use Chromebooks as a tool for math and writing. I have also seen teachers with nervous jitters, express moments of hesitancy, implement brilliant facilitation moves, and delve into engagement strategies.

Our needs as instructional leaders during these early moments is to feel encouragement and security, especially when things don't always go as planned. When a teacher feels uneasy about his/her/they learning gaps around instruction, they may or may not share with a colleague or school leader. In a safe professional learning culture, there’s no need to hide because struggle and failure are neutralized, normalized, and even celebrated. Consider this: Once a week, with a colleague, share something you have struggled with and what you may be learning in the process as you grapple with it.

Research supports that professional development plays a key role in providing teachers with knowledge and skills to hone teaching practices, to rejuvenate them, and to improve student learning. It also assists teachers in successfully implementing curricula. As teachers become aware of the need to change teaching practices in order to improve teacher efficacy, professional development provides opportunities to gain confidence and heighten their sense of personal efficacy. DuFour (2002) maintained that curriculum implementation is a process of innovation and change, and the overarching goal of any curriculum implementation is the improvement of student learning. Remember, as the adults in our system get better at we do and improve, so will students.

Have a great week!

Stronger Together, Better Together.

COVID-19 Update

A dashboard has been created on our website to share information about the positive COVID-19 cases in our schools. The positive cases reported are those where the positive case may or may not have been physically on campus during the infectious period. This does NOT necessarily indicate in-school transmission.

This clarification is related to when an exposure occurs with unvaccinated individuals and intended to reduce at home quarantines.

For someone to be ineligible for modified quarantine, the unmasked exposure period does not need to reach a total of 15 unmasked minutes. If they have a cumulative total of 15 minutes of close contact (masked or not) throughout the day, and any significant portion of that time is unmasked (i.e. for lunch), they are not eligible for modified quarantine.

Sonoma County officials are coordinating efforts to offer juvenile vaccine clinics (for 5-11 year olds) in cooperation with pediatric providers. The goal is to open clinics in early November as the FDA will allow. More information will be shared when available, including a parent education webinar component currently under discussion.

You can find the most up to date information about upcoming community vaccination clinics here at scoe.org/vaccines.
