What Makes LSC Different?

What's it like to be a scholar at LSC?

What's it like to be a part of the LSC team and family?
LSC founders are believers and fighters committed to giving children – no matter their socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or where they live – the tools needed to reach their full potential. To be "#LibertyStrong" means we are spending each and every day ensuring that, no matter what, our scholars are in an environment where they will develop good character, be challenged academically, and succeed on their road to and through college and career. LSC has committed itself to designing strong systems & structures that allow the best teachers to continually hone their craft. We invite you to join this dynamic movement!
2022-23 CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

April is the Month of the Military Child LSC is home to 20 military scholars. During the month of April, we collected over 3,000 items to stuff care packages for airmen returning from an overseas deployment right here in Sumter. We love and appreciate all that our military does for our community! | Morning Huddles at LSC At LSC, we strive to increase communication across all stakeholder groups to further allow us to achieve out ambitious goals. One way we do that is through our operating mechanisms such as the morning huddle, where all staff meet for a standing 10 minute meeting to align on team priorities and support needed. | LSC's First Field Trip a Success Our founding scholars made some special memories at Dorr Farms recently on our first field trip. They were able to learn about bees & pollination, the life cycle of a plant, visit several farm animals, and pick their own strawberries. We are grateful to the 100+ parents who came out to help make the trip even more successful and to the Sumter School District for allowing us to use their buses for transportation. |

LSC Uses Project-Based Curricula
Expeditionary Learning (ELA)Through a series of modules, each one in grades K-2 is comprised of two one-hour blocks of content-based literacy (Module Lessons and K-2 Labs) and the third hour of structured phonics (K-2 Reading Foundations Skills Block). Together, these three hours of project-based curriculum teach and formally assess all strands of the Language Arts standards for each grade level. | Eureka (Math) Numbers should add up to more than a right answer. They should inspire aha moments and joyful connections. Eureka Math® set a new standard for rigor, coherence, and focus in the classroom so students gain a deeper understanding of the why behind the numbers, all while making math more enjoyable to learn and teach. | Project Lead the Way (STEM) PLTW provides transformative learning experiences & hands-on STEM lessons for our scholars that align with the Next Generation Science Standards. Through a series of modules, scholars are presented with a real-world problem and must work collaboratively to use the Engineering Design Process to create a prototype that solves the problem. |

Let's learn more about Tatiana Reyes!
What's your role at LSC? I am a lead kindergarten teacher here at Liberty STEAM.
What inspired you to be an educator/in education? I have wanted to be a teacher since I was a child, and my passion for education grew as I got older.I’ve been blessed with educators who inspired me and pushed me, and I always wanted to make that kind of impact. Being a first year teacher is honestly a dream come true.
What is most exciting about opening LSC's first Academy? The most exciting part of being a founding teacher at LSC is the opportunity to be a part of lasting change in Sumter and South Carolina education. I know that the work we do in this first year is laying the foundation that is so needed in our community, and I can’t wait to see how we build on it and grow in the years to come.
What is one fun fact about you people wouldn't know? I love to paint! One of my favorite things to do is paint and create in my spare time, and I love sharing art and art projects with students.

Classroom Spotlight - The Wondrous Woofpack
This newsletter's Classroom Spotlight shines brightly on our 1st grade Wondrous Woof Pack. Under the leadership of Lead Teacher Emily Hatfield & Teaching Fellow Alexis Kelley, scholars in this class are growing their brains so much, recently learning about place value, shapes, time, and informational text and writing! The Wondrous Woof Pack has been implementing technology to engage scholars in reading & math actively. These scholars have enjoyed various activities on Zearn and BrainpopJr. to reinforce classroom instruction from their teachers as well as leveled reading time on Raz Kids.
Along with academics, the Wondrous Woof Pack is working hard each and every day to build a strong classroom community and to display the three core values of LSC (Power of Team, Growth Mindset, and Stand of Up and Own It). The Wondrous Woof Pack enjoys singing, dancing, reading books, and working hard! Each and every one of our scholars in the Wondrous Woof Pack has made so much growth and we cannot wait to watch them blossom in second grade! Keep up the hard work Wondrous Woof Pack!

LSC Hosts First Eagle Gentleman's Brunch All of our gentleman scholars were treated to a special brunch recently at the Eagle's nest with special visitors from Shaw Air Force Base to facilitate a boost in confidence! As a special treat, each of our Eagle gentlemen were gifted with two new ties. | Network Leaders Present at State Charter Conference Our network team had the amazing opportunity to showcase strategies behind the organization's branding to ensure a fully enrolled school on the first day of school with 93 other public charter schools across the state at the spring charter conference. | Family Engagement a Top Priority at LSCWe had so much fun at our last family engagement event, called "Start with Stories." Approximately 61% of our parents came out to "start the day" with breakfast in the Eagle Cafe with their scholars and to read in the classroom. We are still on our way to reading one million words by the end of the year. |

Founding Parent Spotlight
Meet McCall Campbell, proud mother of founding kindergarten scholar - Brystol Campbell from the Terrific Transformers Class of 2034!
1. What attracted you to LSC? I went to a small private school growing up, so I have always believed that the public school system has so much more to offer the students. I was eager to learn more when I heard about a charter school opening up in Sumter. After learning that Trevor Ivey was on board and knowing how motivated he is when it comes to education, I honestly believed that LSC was going to offer an amazing education for the scholars.
2. Why do you believe LSC is the best fit for your child? I love that LSC focuses on the scholar as a whole. Brystol comes home each day and proudly shows off what she has learned at school. She has grown and learned so much since the beginning of the school year. It really does amaze me! In addition to her school work, she is learning Spanish, sign language, and taekwondo. The best part is how excited she is to go each day. As a parent, I can’t ask for much more than that.
3. What has your child enjoyed the most since attending LSC? She says that her favorite thing about LSC is the teachers and staff members. Each morning we are greeted by smiling staff members. Once she gets out of the car, at least one staff member hugs her before she enters the building. And the same is true in the afternoons. I feel like LSC has done an amazing job recruiting staff members that honestly love their job and want to be there each day. I believe the staff members love the scholars just as much as the scholars love them.
4. What would you share with those looking to become involved with LSC by donating time or resources? Please do it, you will not regret it! These children are so appreciative and excited to have volunteers come to visit them at school. There have been several activities for the scholars and their families that were sponsored by people/companies in the community and each time the turnout has been huge! The scholars and families are excited about LSC. Donated resources/funds are passed straight along to the scholars, and the kids truly appreciate all of the opportunities that they are given.
