Spray Paint Art
An Uncommon Medium
I think when most people hear the mention of spray painting; their first response is generally a negative one. They may think of graffiti that they may have seen on buildings or for people who may live in the country; it could be seeing somebody’s name on a water tower. In either case, most mentions of Spray Paint Art in the media or its use in movies and video games is generally done to depict something in a negative fashion.
A couple of years ago I came across a link on the internet that looked interesting. It was of a guy in New York City spray painting on a piece of poster board. Early in the video it was difficult to make out what he was doing but by the end you could tell it was the New York City skyline. The amazing thing was that the entire video lasted about six minutes. I was impressed by the amount of detail that he was able to create in such a short amount of time. More impressively, he was able to create amazing detail using common household items such as plates, bowls, and newspapers.
As time went by, and after watching more videos of people creating similar types of art, I decided I would give it a try. The first few paintings I did were difficult. There was a lot of trial and error, but over time I began to get a handle on the techniques that can be used to make these paintings. Now, after a lot of practice, I have completed quite a few paintings that I think turned out well and I am very proud of.
Fortunately, compared to when I started, the interested in Spray Paint Art seems to be increasing. The amount of reference videos that I have been able to find online has been increasing. I have added a link for those who would like to watch it. Additionally, there is even a T.V show about Spray Paint Art called “Street Art Showdown.” Hopefully, with more positive stories, the interest in Art in general will increase.
