Culture of Dignity: Lesson 5
As part of the Culture of Dignity program started in March, a weekly lesson is presented. These lessons can be carried out at school or home, and are designed to be a partnership involving student, parent, and teacher. The school welcomes any questions you may have and thanks you for your support.
This week: Managing Technology
Objectives:
*Connecting social norms in real life to online life.
*Be aware of ones self-identity and how you choose to communicate/manage this identity on social media.
*Show importance of online social communication to friendships.
*Consequences when personal identity is perpetually joined with others perceived (judged) expectations.
Session Takeaways:
*Social media experiences - (Most people have had stressful or confusing experiences)
*Examine how wanting emotional verification through social media influences thinking and behavior. (Are you showing the real you, or the "ideal" you for likes? Where are you getting the ideas of the "ideal" you from?
*Pictures and words on social media do not post themselves. Use self-reflection to see how you might be trying to impress someone.
Challenge Yourself:
For three days don't look at your phone until 15 minutes before leaving for school/work, or not until lunch.
Be aware of your feelings when gaming or looking at social media. (And how the mood has changed after you get off line!)
Be aware of how you express your feelings and thoughts before posting.
Talk About It:
Please take a moment to ask your student what they learned, giving them the opportunity to share knowledge and insight.
Discussion Starters:
* Do you feel you communicate better online or in person?
*Can you see how trying to gain the ideal online image can lead to insecurities and stress?
*Do you feel social media has power over how you feel about yourself?
*Is it possible social media influences your thoughts about world/social issues in a way you aren't aware of?
*Does it embarrass your student if you personally post about them on your social media accounts?
*Would they like to approve anything you may post about them first?

Tips Please
*DO NOT BE LATE TO SCHOOL AND ADD MORE STRESS. Allow yourself plenty of time to do things needed to be done before the test and still be a little early.
**Get a good nights sleep!
**Eat a healthy breakfast. You don't want to get the hangries!
*AVOID thinking you need to cram just before the test.
*AVOID speaking to fellow students who express negativity or will distract you. You will see them later. No feelings hurt.
*Read test directions carefully! Review all answer choices.
*If you go blank, skip the question or essay, as other questions may trigger an answer. BUT remember to come back!
***There is no reward for finishing first. If others are turning their papers in, good for them. You go on with your awesome self, taking your time and relax. You got this.
If you start to feel anxious: Expect it.
*Relax, you are in control. Really.
* Take slow, deep breathes.
*Pause. Take it step by step, not dwelling on all the steps.
*Anxiety is a reminder you want to do your best and can provide energy. Use it like a tool to motivate and be patient with yourself.
***Due to test security, parents of students who are testing will not be allowed to eat lunch with their children on test days.
** Please avoid making appoinments for your child on test days. Students can't leave and come back to finish the test.
Free Summer Camp
If anyone knows of any children 6-17 who've lost a parent, sibling, or grandparent, or someone SUPER close in their family that they've lived with, Camp Erin Braveheart is FREE and it's first come first serve. It's the MOST highly recommended camp the school's mental health counselor has heard of.
*The first 100 applications are accepted, so turn application in as soon as possible. Typically camp fills up by the end of June, but every year is different.
