Choose Kind
Although our journeys are unique, and we all face individual challenges, genuine connection is key especially during difficult and stressful times. We need one another now more than ever. Every day we have a choice on how we show up in our communities and for ourselves. Choosing kindness is appreciating and celebrating the beauty around you and in others.
Kindness begins with practicing self-compassion. Self-compassion involves being kind to yourself, accepting your mistakes and shortcomings and showing the same understanding towards ourselves as we would a friend experiencing a tough time or setback.
There are many ways to participate in the kindness movement, including:
- Crack the Kindness Code! For the month of February, look for interactive signs with fun code cracking activities around Strathcona County. Do you have what it takes? To get started, visit: www.strathcona.ca/choosekind **On January 27th, the webpage will have specific information on Crack to Code to Kindness (there are 6 different virtual break out rooms that are engaging, interactive focused on kindness)
- Self Compassion: Re-filling your emotional cup on Feb 3 from 12 – 1 p.m.
- Cyberworld: What happens when you press send? on Feb 9 from 12 – 1 p.m
- Creating safer spaces for 2SLGBTQ+ people on Feb 22 from 12 – 1 p.m
Learning & being curious together at FRH
As the FRH community continues to expand its learning, we carry on with our work toward an understanding of multiple ways of expressing culture. One of those ways is through art. While we are cognizant that we live on Treaty 6 land, we believe that it is important to show off multiple regions of Canadian Indigenous culture in the art around the building. You may remember a couple of weeks ago when we highlighted Edmonton Oilers defenseman Ethan Bear & the story behind his jersey from last season. We thought we’d take time to show you some of the art around FRH & the connection to that story from earlier. Since we can't have you in the building we wanted to share a couple of the pieces hanging up at F. R. Haythorne.
We have replicas of art from Alex Janvier (who we highlighted last week), Aaron Paquette (an Edmonton city councilor) and many others.
If you are interested in seeing more of the art around our building, please visit our website.
School and Transportation Fee Waiver Applications: Deadline extended
Application for a Waiver of Fees. Because of the pandemic, the new deadline is Feb. 15, 2021—if you’re new to EIPS, the deadline is the latter of Feb. 15, 2021, or 45 days after registration.
Fees are posted on the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
Returning Student Registration (2021-22 school year) from Feb 1-28, 2021
Families of all returning students must complete the process to confirm the school their child plans to attend in the 2021-22 school year. Additionally, students who want to attend a non-designated school need to make that request through the returning student registration process—acceptance is based on available space.
FR Haythorne is an open boundary school for the upcoming school year.
Access to the Returning Student Registration Form is provided through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you don’t have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, you need to set one up before Feb. 1, 2021.
Caregiver Education Series
Alberta Health Services is hosting a series of caregiver information sessions focused on ways to support students’ mental health. The sessions are free and geared toward parents, caregivers, teachers and community members who want to learn more about challenges impacting children and adolescents. This year, session topics include anxiety, ADHD, depression, self-harm, technology, teens and teaching leadership skills, and more.
Visit Caregiver Education for the Edmonton Zone for more information and session dates.
High School Information Nights
To help you make an informed decision about high school, senior high schools throughout Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) are hosting virtual information sessions for all Grade 9 students and their families. The sessions allow students and families to meet the staff; virtually tour the school; learn about the curriculum, course offerings and alternative programming available; discuss diploma requirements and various career paths; plus, more. Make sure to take part to learn everything you need to know about the Division’s senior high programs and courses.
Dates and times for each senior high open house are available at eips.ca/registration/senior-high. For general information about EIPS senior high programming visit eips.ca.
