December 14, 2018
Hi All,
We're rounding the corner to December Vacation! Just a reminder that homework will not be assigned during the break- students and staff should take some time to recoup, be with friends and family, and come back to school well-rested in the New Year.
Q2 Progress Reports are being distributed to students today in Home Room- please ask for them!
Starting next week and through January, our School Resource Officers will deliver 4Ls training over two class sessions to students currently enrolled in Physical Education and Wellness classes. All remaining students will receive the training in their PE and Wellness classes during 2nd semester. This training has been designed for high school students to promote situational awareness and teach problem-solving in emergency situations. School staff are collaborating to ensure that this training is positively received by all students.
The Basketball Endowment games last weekend raised over a $1,000 to support members of our school community- thanks to all who attended and contributed. Also, you are cordially invited to attend the Winter Concert at 7PM on Wednesday the 19th - the Auditorium is decked out and students have been diligently rehearsing- don't miss it!
On behalf of MHS Administration, I wish you a wonderful holiday season and a very happy New Year!
Have a great weekend, and see you in 2019!
Best regards,
Mary Watkins

Hour of Code
Nearly 600 Mansfield High School students celebrated Computer Science Education Week by participating in the Hour of Code event. The Hour of Code was created to give students an hour of programming experience with the goal of reaching students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to learn it. Students worked with various languages such as Java, Scratch, and Python to build apps, create games, and design artwork. Thank you to the following teachers who allowed their students to take part in this worldwide event that has reached over 695 million students: Mrs. Jarvis, Ms. Kenny, Mrs. Pennie, Mrs. Prester, Mr. Rodrigues, Mrs. Sclafani, and Mrs. Vacirca.

AFL-CIO Scholarship Program
The Annual AFL-CIO Scholarship Program is in its 61st year. Through the scholarship program, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO is honored to continue a long tradition of helping students continue their education as they work toward creating bright futures.
The Massachusetts AFL-CIO scholarship program awardees receive between $500 and $16,000 towards their education. Over 40 unions, central labor councils, area businesses and charitable trusts from across Massachusetts participate in awarding scholarships that total nearly half a million dollars. Unions in Massachusetts have given close to $10 million in scholarships since 2000. About 1,500 students take the exam annually to compete for a scholarship. Students with a union affiliation are eligible for both the Massachusetts AFL-CIO awards and those awards listed under their specific local union/central labor council. Massachusetts students that do not have union affiliation are eligible for the Massachusetts AFL-CIO scholarships only.
