Read Gram Is Coming to My House.

- Introduce the name of the author.
- Ask child to predict what this book is about.
- Discuss giants that are used for travel.
- Read the story.
- Ask: Where did Gram go to get on a plane? What did she need to board the plane? Ask: Where did Gram go to get on the train. What did she need to get on the train?
- Discuss the sources of energy for airplanes and trains. (Smaller planes called prop planes use a form of gasoline for energy. Some trains in cities use electricity as an energy source. Trains and planes need energy sources to move and carry passengers and cargo. People need energy as well. Have child tell their favorite sources of energy (milk, fruit, cereal, pizza)

Airplanes fly in the sky,

Math and Science
- Display picture of the cruise ship on page 15 in Giants Made by People. Focus child attention on the ship's capacity for holding passengers.
- Ask how many people they think might be able to fit on the ocean liner.
- Display a jar filled with 100 objects(pennies, cubes, crayons,etc.)
- Tell child there is 100 pennies in the jar.
- Ask: If I give you a penny from this jar, will there be enough pennies for everyone?
- Build upon child fascination with 100 to help child visualize a cruise ship's capacity(ability to hold several hundred people, their luggage and furniture)
- Ask child why cruise ship doesn't sink with so much weight on it.
- Display a clear container filled with water. Place a plastic lid on the surface. Point out that the lid is floating. lace a set of counters(frogs, pennies or any objects) beside container.
- Ask how many (frogs, pennies, etc.) could I fit on the lid before it begins to sink?
- Invite child to count with you as you begin to place pennies or other objects one by one on the lid.
- When the lid begins to tilt into the water and some of the pennies begin to fall off, count the total.
- Emphasize the last number in the count.
- Ask how many pennies are able to fit on the lid?
- Write number on index card or paper and display it next to the lid.
- Tell child that this number tells us how many pennies the lid can carry without tipping over.
