Roadrunner Review

Principal's Message
The 2017/2018 school year is off to a great start! I'm pleased to announce that we will be celebrating 20 years of excellence this year. Stay tuned for how we will celebrate and when we will be unearthing the time capsule!
Prior to school starting, all Canyon Rim teachers participated in professional development focused on building a Culture of Kindness and Respect. Research states that focusing on positive core values reduces bullying in schools. The students have spent the first weeks of school learning about the Big R: Respectful, Responsible and Ready to Learn with a Kind Heart. They've been so eager to flash me the Big R signal. They've been earning raffle tickets by displaying Big R/kind actions. I will pull several tickets each month for students to come to the office and earn a prize. At our first school assembly, students learned about the definition of bullying and the importance of reporting bullying to an adult. They also learned how to prevent and handle bullying by being an "upstander," not a bystander. I'm proud of our kind-hearted students who are committed to doing the right thing!
In addition to our focus on character, academics are in full swing as well. All students in every grade are using Thinking Maps-visual tools that are used to identify the 8 cognitive skills. I told a kindergarten student today, "You just created a Circle Map just like the 6th graders!" She couldn't believe she was doing 6th grade work! It's been a pleasure to see all teachers implementing our new ELA adoption: McGraw Hill's Wonders. Right now, each teacher is working on the Start Smart portion of the curriculum which trains the students in the instructional routines they will be using all year. 5th and 6th grade students have been learning about AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)-which is focused on organization, note taking, study skills, and inquiry. These are skills that will help them be successful scholars from now and through college.
Thank you for the impressive turn out at Back to School Night. It truly is an honor to lead a school with such an involved and supportive parent community. Please join us as a PTA member by signing up online at: http://canyonrimpta.com/supportpta/pta-membership-drive/ Thank you for trusting us with your child's care and education.
Sincerely,
Erika Krohn, Principal
