Principal's Message

Dear Canyon Rim Families,

The 2017/2018 school year is off to a great start! I'm pleased to announce that we will be celebrating 20 years of excellence this year. Stay tuned for how we will celebrate and when we will be unearthing the time capsule!

Prior to school starting, all Canyon Rim teachers participated in professional development focused on building a Culture of Kindness and Respect. Research states that focusing on positive core values reduces bullying in schools. The students have spent the first weeks of school learning about the Big R: Respectful, Responsible and Ready to Learn with a Kind Heart. They've been so eager to flash me the Big R signal. They've been earning raffle tickets by displaying Big R/kind actions. I will pull several tickets each month for students to come to the office and earn a prize. At our first school assembly, students learned about the definition of bullying and the importance of reporting bullying to an adult. They also learned how to prevent and handle bullying by being an "upstander," not a bystander. I'm proud of our kind-hearted students who are committed to doing the right thing!

In addition to our focus on character, academics are in full swing as well. All students in every grade are using Thinking Maps-visual tools that are used to identify the 8 cognitive skills. I told a kindergarten student today, "You just created a Circle Map just like the 6th graders!" She couldn't believe she was doing 6th grade work! It's been a pleasure to see all teachers implementing our new ELA adoption: McGraw Hill's Wonders. Right now, each teacher is working on the Start Smart portion of the curriculum which trains the students in the instructional routines they will be using all year. 5th and 6th grade students have been learning about AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)-which is focused on organization, note taking, study skills, and inquiry. These are skills that will help them be successful scholars from now and through college.

Thank you for the impressive turn out at Back to School Night. It truly is an honor to lead a school with such an involved and supportive parent community. Please join us as a PTA member by signing up online at: Thank you for trusting us with your child's care and education.

Soccer and STEM at Recess!

As part of our building a Culture of Kindness and Respect initiative, Canyon Rim is pleased to offer a Soccer and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) pilot program which will take place during lunch recess for 1st-6th graders. Two coaches will be out 4 days a week at lunch recess (not Wednesdays) providing soccer and STEM instruction on the field. The purpose of the program is to: 1) Promote positive student engagement at recess 2) Prevent bullying 3) Teach STEM vocabulary and concepts in a soccer format. Each day of the week will be designated for specific grade levels. Fridays, all grade levels may participate. This pilot program will begin the week of September 18 and continue until March 2. Stay tuned for updates and photos!

Volunteer Policy

We love volunteers! In order to keep our students safe and comply with Orange Unified School District policy, all volunteers must be be approved through the district. If you signed up at Back to School Night to be a classroom volunteer, you will need to fill out a Volunteer Assistance Request (copies in office) and the office will need to take a copy of your Driver's License. Once you are approved by the district, Cecilia, our office manager, will make a Volunteer Badge for you to wear. You must wear the badge when you are on campus to volunteer. Thank you to all of our valued volunteers!

Attendance Matters!!

Start the school year off right by instilling the importance of promptness and good attendance! Students cannot learn if they are not here. Please only keep your children out if they are ill. Click on the link for 10 Facts about School Attendance:

Free Public Education Policy

As a public school, all students are entitled to a free public education. Donations are voluntary. Our school requests donations for class parties, field trips, and more. No students will be barred from participating in school activities or negatively impacted because of a failure to donate money to the program.
